Altadena Rescue Group Looking to Help 'Bo,' A Dog With Cancer

Trained Dogs for Adoption is run by an Altadena couple that helps shelter dogs and strays that need extra attention. Bo, a rottweiler, has lymphoma and needs money for treatment.

Bo, a 5-year-old rottweiler, loves to bask in the sun, walk in the park, and sit in people's laps.

And he also needs help with his medical bills: Bo has lymphoma, has already begun chemo therapy, and has a pair of Altadena residents who have committed to doing what they can for him.

Catherine and Tom Peters, of Altadena, run a dog rescue group called Trained Dogs for Adoption which focuses on shelter animals who need help from a dog trainer to transition into a home.

The pair are holding a yard sale at 1836 Roosevelt Avenue on Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon to help raise funds for Bo's treatment.

The sale will include "the usual garage sale items, some baked goods, and craft items," according to Peters, and Bo will be making a visit.

Bo was found on the street when he was about a year old, according to Peters, and they met him at the kennel in Azusa where they house other rescue dogs that they work with.

They grew to like Bo and suggested to the kennel's owner that Bo go with them on visits to the dog trainer so he could continue to prepare for transitioning into a home.

The group focuses on German Shepherds, but helps out other breeds as well.  Peters said most of the animals they work with come from the Pasadena Humane Society and the county facility in Baldwin Park.  Many of them are not really suitable for adoption and need time outside the shelter to help prepare them for public owners, Peters said.

The couple have been rescuing dogs for many years, and eventually became convinced that they should actually start their own rescue group Peters said.

"Somehow we had become the couple who always were taking in difficult dogs," Peters said.

Current dogs that the Peters' are working with can be viewed on their website.  Adoption information in included.

You are wonderful people! I will be out of town for your sale but would love to contribute to future fundraisers through donations of art work.

I tried to contact them via email, but was bounced back - we'd be happy to put a donation can at our Webster's Community Pharmacy register - I'm sure lots of folks would make a contribution for Bo - please contact me!

Meredith, Catherine Peters, who is one of the two running the non-profit, responded to the above two comments, so I suspect she will read yours and be able to contact you. If that does not happen I can put you in touch.

Yer breakin' my heart. Oh, what a sweetie. And what wonderful people. BTW, I saw this on twitter via Lori Webster, who says they've put up a donation jar at Webster's Fine Stationers to help with this.
