Animal Magnetism

You can tell the pet for you just by meeting them face-to-face.

The gentlest dog I ever met was a pit bull named Buster. The most ornery dog I ever knew was a five-pound yorkie named Sweetie. Buster and Sweetie, I had their number and they had mine.

Dogs wear their heart on their sleeve. Good heart, rogue heart, it doesn't take long to know what you've got.  The former would rescue a litter of castaway kittens.  The latter would steal a roast from the table and then, just when the wrath of the family was about to descend, collapse on floor and point a paw to his heart.

Some of us happen to have a thing for rascals.

This goes for cats, too.  True character will come out, and you won't be blindsided.

That's why it's easy to walk down the aisle at Pasadena Humane Society, or any pet rescue place, and have a pretty good idea who is right for you.

This week we'll practice kitchen-sink rescue at the Pasadena Humane Society, and revel in the beauty of six very special cats and dogs.

Last week's snowball dogs were adopted. However, the elegant young (and very gentle) boxer from last week is still here, as is the brindle mix.  Though the sign on the Brindle says "Pit mix stray," no way. Stray, yes, but if I know dogs (and indeed I do), this fellow is lab and boxer, but on the small, slim and quiet side.  Dogs walked up and down the aisle, but he only had eyes for me. I like a man with a good attention span.

Next, I embarrassed myself by babbling puppy-talk to two little charmers. I have a crush on the blond, but what I like about both (other than the obvious over-cute factor), is that they were quietly eager and calm. Little big dogs. Or, is that big little dogs?

The cat room was going through renovations, but I managed to look in on a few. And grab a video of a couple as they got acquainted -- a little girl and a kitten. The two seemed to hit it off. Young love.

"...True character will come out."

You're providing a good example at how to look at these poor guys.

Too often I just see a depressing situation and don't take the time to interact with them.

Is that the brindle in the photo? He doesn't look like a pitbull, does he? Those sad, sad eyes are breaking my heart. Hope he soon gets a forever home. The little ones won't stay long, they're adorable. As for the kitties - I wish them a Very Happy Xmas with a nice family, and hope the little girl got her kitten. Just read that the Pasadena Humane Society has just taken in nearly 150 more cats from a woman who couldn't stop rescuing - that's a lot more to find homes for, isn't it?

I'd be embarrassing myself with the coochy-coo talk too if I was there with you, KB. Thank you for featuring these babes and animal adoption in general. It all helps. Here's to some happy new homes in time for Christmas.

My family once had a warrior Manx who would occasionally bag pheasant. But, this mighty hunter of a cat had the gooiest heart imaginable: he kidnapped a kitten and brought her home so he'd have company. We discovered him carrying food out to his tiny little friend, so we brought her in and made her part of the family, too.

Oh, those mighty animal hearts.

That spotted lab-boxer sure is a cutie.

I heard on the radio today that the Humane Society (maybe LA county?) is offering gift certificates for the holidays. You buy the certificate and give it as a gift, then the recipient can go and pick out their pet. That way they can choose the animal that's right for them. I think either of those dogs would be about right for me.

Mighty hearts, yes! Christina, that story deserves an illustrated children's book.

I agree that brindle does not look like a pit mix - not that there's anything wrong with pit mixes. I love that action shot of him. He's a catch, a real catch. Here's hoping some wonderful humans open their hearts and homes to each and everyone of these beautiful dogs and cats.
