Pet of the Week: Second Chances

Pepe: Too good to forget

Pepe, our pet of last week,  is still here at the Pasadena Humane Society. People … PEOPLE, what are you thinking? Why stew over the economy, global warming, the past elections, when you should be concerned with things that really matter?  Puppies, for instance.

It's my fault, no doubt. I didn't make it clear that Pepe, in addition to all his virtues and tidy personal habits,  is also a babe magnet.

And this matters to you because?

Because, maybe your best friends are afraid to tell you, but I'm not:  You're so good looking,  smart and/or creative, that sometimes you seem unapproachable. But the solution is easy: Get a dog. Instant ice-breaker, particularly if the dog has a charming under bite, loving personality and a curly tail.

On the other hand, maybe you need your space--space for intellectual and artistic pursuits and time to consider life's big questions,  time away from friends who are still yammering about the San Francisco Giants.  Well, Pepe's here and Pepe wants to hear you out. He'll look into your soul with his soft brown eyes and say, "You are the most brilliant person I've ever met."  You've heard that line before? The difference is,  Pepe means it.

Or maybe you have kids. No one could be a better, more loving friend.

Lastly, you tell jokes, really funny jokes no one seems to get? Pepe understands humor. He  even laughed at the one I told about the Swedish farmer.  (I'm Norwegian; I think Pepe is, too. Or he's Italian or Australian, and just knows a Swedish farmer.)

Once again, the Pasadena Humane Society is a pleasant place to visit. Stop by and touch a few wet noses. You'll leave in a good mood. I always do.

And when you visit, say hi to Pepe.  He'll remember you the next time.  He absolutely remembered me.

About this column: Every week Altadena Patch will highlight a pet with unusual abilities or a special one who is looking for a new home.

Watch it, girl. Not only is Pepe a very lovable dog, I note his scarf is orange and black, and you're not going to convince me that was for Halloween or Oregon State. But Pepe is very adaptable: he'll become a Dodger fan at the drop of a kibble.

What a cutie. I'd adopt him if I could. I know he'll liven up some lucky person's home.

Someone really needs to go in there today and take that sweet baby home. He is adorable. And polite too because, well, I've heard that one about the Swedish farmer...

I think RR will hush up about those Giants when I hush up about the Auburn Tigers! :)

Karin, this article and the previous Pepe piece are both priceless. Great writing. Pepe's got excellent P.R. Dogs are guy magnets too, by the way.

In the previous video Pepe had such a "You're right, I look really good" quality to him.

In today's photos he looks like he's able to return the compliment.

But honestly, if I could have a dog, it would be Mr. Pepe.

Another great piece of writing from Ms Bugge: every dog should be so lucky to have her for their PR agent and I know she wouldn't lie, either. I know Pepe is going to have his forever home soon.

Only the very best dogs at the shelter get those rosettes, so he must be really, really well-behaved, and will make some lucky person a very good companion. I can attest to dogs as guy magnets - the other day a nice young man I passed on a hike invited me to lunch some day "so we could talk more about my dog". He didn't seem to notice I was old enough to be his grandmother.

What a lump of love! Under-bites are underrated. I think they're adorable.

Pepe is very geographically undesirable for me here in Texas, but I still found myself describing him in detail to my husband. (I know, I know. If and when we get a dog, it'll be a rescue from near where we now live.)

Pepe sounds like the perfect companion. Small dogs are a superb way to meet folks without trying. And they are terrific listeners.

I've been thinking about Pepe all day. I wish he were a doggie who would like a couple of Rottweiler/mutt siblings along with a temperamental tuxedo cat who likes to bop noses. This dog has so much personality, I just want to go grab that underbite. My first dog Blossom had an underbite and I swear that cute thing could get away with anything in our family.

Oh, Pepe is ADORABLE. I'm in love ~ if only I lived over there in the US {and didn't have a bossy kitty who is the centre of my universe}, I'd be heading to collect him before someone else does instead of typing this message. Aside from his obvious good looks and charm, gosh knows, I need someone to laugh at my jokes. Please, please ~ someone take this beautiful boy home.

Shell, I agree. And Laurie, he reminds me of my dog Lucy (except for a few obvious bits). Fingers crossed.

Randy, to wherever/whatever you are posting -- you're wrong. Yes, Patch has seed money from AOL, but it pays its writers, and I'm a big fan of our local and extremely supportive editor.

While many of you can only ogle Pepe from afar, I am lucky enough to live in the same hometown as him. So why have I not gone to meet him yet? Well, because I am afraid I will fall madly in love with him and then Tommy and my two cats would never forgive me if I brought him home. But if I had an empty nest I'd run down there and snatch him up tomorrow.

Pepe is a gorgeous boy and you can see how calm and easy going he is in the videos. Sending hugs for Pepe from Australia.

I'm checking in to see if there's any news. I have a full house, too. I wish I could adopt them all. Saw Pepe in the newspaper today. He's got a blue ribbon for good behavior! I hope he gets a home soon.

I hope the requirements for adopting an animal from here has changed. They have/had a strange requirements. Instead of judging from behind the desk an option should be for a home review before you're not qualified. On that note I will continue to assist my neighborhood with catching and sterilizing wild/owned not cared for cats.

I am worried about the thought of him getting depressed. Dogs absolutely get depressed. I hope this guy finds a home soon!

Terrie, you're a good soul. Pepe found a home about three weeks ago. He was adopted by a couple in Pasadena.
