Can Your Kid Score $250 in a Local Art Contest?

Students from kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to create art that represents or interprets the theme 'Water is Life.' The contest winner will receive a $250 grand prize.

Budding artists and talented foothill kids are invited to use crayons, markers, pencils, paints pastels, paper or fabric to create a poster promoting stewardship of our water resources.  Foothill Municipal Water District and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California are sponsoring the "Water is Life" student art contest for children in kindergarten through 12th grade. Kids from Altadena, La Crescenta and La Cañada Flintridge are eligible to enter the contest before the deadline on May 25.  This is the district’s first time participating in the “Water Is Life” student art contest, which is co-sponsored by Metropolitan Water District, said Daniel Drugan, Education Director at Foothill Municipal Water District.  "We believe that …

Coffee Gallery Backstage Music Promoter Wins Music Award

Bob Stane, who runs Altadena's Coffee Gallery Backstage music venue, has been given an award by the organizers of the annual Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Contest.

Local resident and Altadena Patch reader Donna Barnes-Roberts has the following tribute to Coffee Gallery Backstage promoter Bob Stane, who has been named the Music Legend Award winner at the Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Contest: Yes, the venerable Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Contest has named Bob Stane as their Legend Award winner for 2012.  Bob has made a career of keeping the music alive at various venues including the Ice House in Pasadena until his sort-of-retirement in the 70's.  He now runs the relaxed and enjoyable The Coffee Gallery Backstage on Lake Ave., in Altadena.  Through his many years of providing a place for musicians and entertainers to play, he has helped along a long list of yesterday and today's legends.  For that we are all…

Caltech 32nd Annual Bandorama to be Held Friday and Saturday

The program will feature Caltech-Occidental Concert Band and the Caltech Jazz Bands, with Altadena resident William Bing serving as director.

Caltech will hold its 32nd annual Bandorama program on Friday and Saturday, with Altadena resident William Bing serving as director and Altadena resident Frank Ticheli serving as guest conductor. The program will be held Friday night and Saturday night at 8 p.m. at the Ramo Auditorium at Caltech.  Admission is free. The groups performing are the Caltech-Occidental Concert Band and the two Caltech Jazz Bands, which draw their musicians from the students, faculty, staff and alumni of the California Institute of Technology and Occidental College, the Caltech-administered Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the local community Bing, according to his Caltech bio,  has been teaching at Caltech for over thirty years and has played and recorded with …

Rescheduled LitFest Pasadena Event to be Held May 12

The literary event at Pasadena Central Park includes contributions from Altadena novelists and other Altadena participants.

The Litfest Pasadena event that was originally held for March will be held on May 12 in Pasadena's Central Park. Though the event takes place in Pasadena, there are several participants from Altadena: Michele Huneven, an Altadena novelist will be featured in one of the two biggest events of the day, Michele Zack, a board member at Altadena Heritage and former Town Council member is one of the organizers, and Altadena resident and novelist Jervey Tervalon is one of the founders of the event and will be moderating discussion panels. The event was originally scheduled for March but was cancelled for rain. Schedule Released for Farnsworth Park Summer Concerts

The following bands will appear at the Farnsworth Park free Saturday night concert series

The schedule has been released for the Concerts in the Park summer concert series that take place Saturday nights at Farnsworth Park. The free concerts are held at 7 p.m. on Saturday from July 7 to September 8.  Snacks, soft drinks, and beer and wine are available for sale at the concerts, and there is a picnic area for people who want to bring food. The concerts are organized by the Sheriff's Support Group of Altadena. The scheduled performers are listed below and in the flyer on right. Altadena Library Names 2012 Poet Laureate

Altadena poet Linda Dove, who has published two poetry collections, will be Altadena Library's poet laureate for a year term starting in May.

Altadena poet Linda Dove has been named poet laureate for the Altadena Library for a term starting in May 2012, according to librarian Pauline Dutton. Dove holds a Ph.D. in Renaissance literature and most recently taught at Yavapai College in Arizona, according to Dutton.  She is the author of the 2009 collection In Defense of Objects and the 2011 collection O Dear Deer. She is active in Altadena RIPE, the community food bank, and with an Altadena-based Girl Scouts troop, according to Dutton. Dove will be introduced at the library's annual Poetry and Cookies event on April 21 at 2 p.m.  Her work will be featured at that event and in the library’s annual poetry anthology. PUSD Cesar Chavez Art and Essay Contest Winners

Students ranging from K-12 grade levels participated in an art and essay contest in honor of labor activist Cesar Chavez. Five students in Altadena schools placed in the contest.

The Pasadena Unified School District announced the winners of its K-12 Cesar Chavez Day art and essay contest winners, and five students come from Altadena schools. Jordan Trice, a fifth-grader from Altadena Elementary, took second place in the Grade 3-5 art contest; 8th-grader Cynthia Sandoval, from Eliot Middle School, took second in the Grade 6-8 art contest; 1st-grader Joshua Lee Roberson, from Franklin Elementary, took 3rd place in the K-2 essay contest; 5th-grader Anayeli Rodriguez, of Jackson Elementary, took first place in the Grade 3-5 essay contest; 4th-grader Vanessa De La Cruz, of Altadena Elementary, took second place in the Grade 3-5 essay contest. 'Charles White's Altadena' at the Pacific Asia Museum

The renowned Altadena artist will be the subject of a lecture that will also focus on life in Altadena prior to 1980.

There will be a lecture on Altadena artist Charles White and his experiences living in Altadena before 1980 at the Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena on Sunday. The lecture will be given by White's son, Ian White, as well as author Lyn Kienholz, who has written extensively about the Los Angeles art scene in the era up to 1980. The lecture is part of an ongoing series of presentations and exhibits called Pacific Standard Time that have been hosted at more than 60 museums in Los Angeles County. White did the bulk of his well-known art work in the 1960s and 1970s, and was known as having work with a socially conscious message.  He died in Altadena in 1979 and there was a regular art festival named after him held in the city for much the 1980s …

Biannual Art on Palm Festival to be Held Today

The arts and crafts show that takes place at a scenic wooded end of Palm Avenue has been scheduled for April 28.

Twice a year, art, crafts and more go for sale at a charity art event at the far end of E. Palm Street.  Art on Palm returns to Altadena on Saturday April 28 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. According to event organizers, items for sale will include: paintings, ceramics, handmade glassware, fabrics, collage, woodwork, metalwork, photography, handmade jewelry, body care products, and more. This Spring, the event will add a new component: free tours of a historical craftsman bungalow called the Valentine House.  The bungalow is built at the base of an oak tree estimated to be 650 years old, according to the event's organizers, who describe the home as having "exceptional stone work."
