I use a flashlight at night, and I have been hiking the Sam Merrill Trail for over fortyRead Moreyears...New bie? You must be kidding me. Not having proper lighting at night is a good way to turn an ankle. Using proper etiquette with flashlights is important. Turn your light away from an approaching hiker's eyes when passing another on the trail, and use as low of a beam as possible for the speed you are traveling. For all those "Anti-flashlight" night hikers out there, I would suggest hiking during the daylight, or find a mountain with no one on it. Most of us "Newbies" prefer to see where they are going...Would you drive your car without lights?...I hate to think of your answer...

Thanks, but no decoration when the pipes are three to four feet underground. The pipe is the mainRead Morese wer drain that goes from the property toward the public pipe. Also the rock are at random points. A picture will come later today.
Surf's Up May 12, 2014 at 06:35 PM
The overlay of rocks at the buttress of two pipes was not decorative. It was structural.
Fortified- I am Buzzlightyear >>>>>>>> May 12, 2014 at 06:46 PM
The pipes had hand packed cement around the joints. It does ring a bell about rocks butting up toRead Moreth e joints as well. But the rocks I found were not those. Also. I don't understand the "structural" part of rocks for structure. The pipes are 3-4 ft. underground. The soil will do, as soil will do. If their is movement. the Rock will move with it. Any movement also has the potential of putting pressure from a large area to a pinpoint spot on the clay, making cracks, and holes in the pipe. The last time I used a plumber to add a clean-out in the yard, he took some of the broken pc. of clay to "support" the new black pipe, before putting the dirt back. We took the broken pieces of clay out. Sharp stuff next to the plastic pipes.....no.......

Hi Cynthia, I would gladly help but I don't hear an alarm. Which water company are you talkingRead Moreabou t? It is disturbing to think the water company is unresponsive to it's neighbor. I wonder what the alarm is for and how long it has been used. May I suggest that you drop a note to your neighbors surrounding the plant? If you create a mini petition to present to the water company (and if necessary then the City Counsel) you are more likely to get a remedy.

Jan, Jack: It's the one on Harriet Street; I live in the same block and I can hear the alarm coming Read Moredirectly from the building. I am not sure if this is just the facility where one pays the bills and not an actual plant, but it is the water company for sure. Great article, or it a short book? A couple of quotes are: 1) “lousy science for distracting Read Morepublic attention from “more serious and more immediate dangers to the planet.” END QUOTE Exactly, this alarmism takes the energy of anyone who is an environmentalist, and detours it, thus actually being a negative. __________________________________________________ 2) "They come to believe models are real and forget they are only models.” 3) "The warming, he says, is not global but local, “making cold places warmer rather than making hot places hotter.” Far from expecting any drastic harmful consequences from these increased temperatures, he says the carbon may well be salubrious — a sign that “the climate is actually improving rather than getting worse,” because carbon acts as an ideal fertilizer promoting forest growth and crop yields. “Most of the evolution of life occurred on a planet substantially warmer than it is now,” he contends, “and substantially richer in carbon dioxide.” 4) "......is still “a relatively cool period in the earth’s history.” __________________________________________________ I recognize Freeman Dyson from my favorite show. "Closer to truth" Which asks the worlds ultimate questions about our universe consciousness, and God. Of course anything of real value, and thinking does not get the respect of having a set time on TV. Every show is available here. Definitely worth checking out. .... ( http://www.closertotruth.com/ )

The Dyson article is interesting. It is also interesting to see what different people take awayRead Morefro m it. "Asymmetry" thinks Dyson "does not believe there is any scientific merit on global warming". I can present quotes from that same article which paint a different picture: ------------------------------------------ "Dyson agrees with the prevailing view that there are rapidly rising carbon-dioxide levels in the atmosphere caused by human activity"------------------------------------------------------------ " Dyson calls ocean acidification, which many scientists say is destroying the saltwater food chain, a genuine but probably exaggerated problem. Sea levels, he says, are rising steadily, but why this is and what dangers it might portend “cannot be predicted until we know much more about its causes.”------------ Coal, Dyson says, contains “real pollutants” like soot, sulphur and nitrogen oxides, “really nasty stuff that makes people sick and looks ugly.” These are “rightly considered a moral evil,” he says, but they “can be reduced to low levels by scrubbers at an affordable cost.” ------------------------------------ “It’s always possible Hansen could turn out to be right,” he says of the climate scientist. “If what he says were obviously wrong, he wouldn’t have achieved what he has."

Hey Steve, You are the only one in the whole country that can read something clearly, logicallyRead Moredeba te, and put up a challenge that I have to think about. I am certainly no expert. But everyone else throw up trash, one line sound bites, and insults, and no one learns anything. I don't know if you are aware, I am much more clear about the points than a year ago. Perhaps the most important point I learned is that all the computer models use the 3 x factor for water vapor without empirical evidence. Everything is a projection using the same idea. I am more sure that almost no one from either side knows anything about it. If you are interested this is a great vid...as I found the link, I see it also has many more I never knew about. I only watched my Favorite so far, "JONOVA". ( http://topher.com.au/50-to-1-video-project/#prettyPhoto )

Clearly on Altadena Patch, anyone can post any comment they like; whether based on fact, innuendo,Read Moreo r whole fiction. Doing so, however does not make it right - nor does it help others. Especially in a small community. The Altadena Town Council will change and morph based on community interest. If citizenry wants the council to take action on the community's behave, like with many town councils it may require a change of members to effectuate that change, should the sitting members be non-responsive. Whining and casting aspersions accomplishes nothing. An armchair quarterback yelling at the television set never changed one the outcome of one football game. The Altadena Town Council hasn't done anything nefarious, this isn't the community of Bell. The thing they may be guilty of is self-interest, not of the bribery variety - but looking after projects they think are important to the exclusion of others. Also, citizens should realize that bringing up an issue at any town council for the first time, may not be the best political strategy to getting an issue looked at. Most lobbyists and savvy political strategist's know - you may need to meet with a council member beforehand explain the problem, or send a issue paper about a perceived problem you want assistance on, prior to raising it at a meeting. Politics requires strategy and learning how best to effectuate a change.
