State Senate Candidates Call For New Representation

The candidates of the 25th Senate District discuss their platforms during Thursday’s forum.

In a newly formed 25th Senate district, two of the three candidates vying for a place on the November ballot championed a new order of representation in Sacramento during a candidate's forum in Glendora last Thursday. Republican Senate candidate Gil Gonzales and Democratic candidate Ameenah Fuller discussed their views on topics important to local voters, including education, taxation and redevelopment. Carol Liu, the Democratic incumbent for the current 21st Senate District and current representative of Altadena was in a budget meeting in Sacramento and could not attend Thursday evening’s forum, according to her assistant. The new 25th district includes Altadena, Pasadena and South Pasadena, and stretches both east and west along the …

Here Are Your Candidates for June 5 Primary

See who’s running for offices representing Altadena in the June 5 primary election.

With the candidates on the June 5 primary election ballot finalized, campaigns and voter registration drives are underway. Recently drawn redistricting maps put previous representatives, Rep. Adam Schiff and Assemblyman Anthony Portantino in new districts, leaving Altadena residents voting for brand new representatives in the House of Representatives and Assembly.  State Sen. Carol Liu, who currently represents Altadena, is running again in the new district representing Altadena. While Portantino originally said he would be running for Congress, he retracted that statement in a press release January. Races for the new districts representing South Pasadena include State Senator 25th District, U.S. Representative 27th District and State …

Candidates for Local Assembly Seat Present Views in Forum

It’s a different ballgame in the June 5 primary, with newly-drawn geographic boundaries for the 41st District and an open primary that erases party lines.

Five candidates for the 41st Assembly District lined up to share their views in a forum sponsored by Southern California Public Radio (KPCC) and the Pasadena Sun on Wednesday night in the Crawford Family Forum.  Though they touched on a variety of issues, the climate for business in California and local transportation were recurring themes in their responses to questions from the audience.  Bill Kisliuk, city editor of the Pasadena Sun, moderated the discussion. The newly-drawn district includes South Pasadena, Altadena, Sierra Madre, Monrovia, as well as Glendora and several other foothill cities in East Los Angeles County.  A map of it can be viewed at right. The candidates are Michael Cacciotti, mayor of South Pasadena; Edward Colton, …

Chris Holden “a longtime proponent of finishing the 710 Freeway” (quote from previous interview of Mr. Holden) has been pushing for years to complete the 710 freeway for use by the LA/LB ports cargo trucks. He doesn’t care if it is a surface freeway or tunnel he just wants to get it done. Ask yourself: Why is he now fighting to build a toll freeway that will only clog our streets with diverted …   more ›

Newly Released PUSD Districting Maps Appear to Favor Incumbents

The PUSD Board will consider six alternatives to a task force's suggested map for introducing electoral districts for the board at a Tuesday hearing. Five of those alternatives would benefit incumbent board members.

A district report released just days prior to a Tuesday hearing on drawing new electoral subdistricts for the PUSD Board includes new map alternatives that benefit incumbents on the board, including four that haven't been seen before. At its Tuesday meeting, the Pasadena Unified School District board will hold its final hearing on a plan that would switch the district from at-large elections to seven geographic subdistricts that would each elect one school board member.  The plan will go on the June ballot as Measure A for Pasadena, Altadena and Sierra Madre voters to consider. Tuesday's hearing will focus on seven potential maps for how to draw the new districts, all of which are variations on a map suggested by a task force appointed by …

"Chawkins, the chair of the task force, in fact, said at a March meeting that the group made a "fundamental decision" not to draw the maps in a way that would benefit incumbent board members." I guess the committee should have asked the district whether it was also one of their goals? :-P   more ›

New PUSD Electoral Map Plan to be Voted on at May 8 Board Meeting

The Pasadena Unified School Board will hold a May hearing on a June ballot measure to switch the district to electoral subdistricts and give Altadena two board members accountable to the town.

At its May 8 meeting, the Pasadena Unified School District board will hold its final hearing on a plan that would switch the district from at-large elections to seven electoral districts that would each elect one school board member. Since January, an appointed task force has been hold public meetings and working on developing maps of geographic sub-districts that would make board members accountable to specific geographic areas of Pasadena, Altadena and Sierra Madre. After initially looking at four different potential map scenarios, the task force released a 'consensus map' in March and approved it to be voted on by the board. That plan would give Altadena residents two districts where they would make up the majority of voters.   The …

I was at the last meeting. Very interesting. Mr. Miramontes and his supporters were arguing for three "latino" seats, and voting by non citizen residents, and holding off any elections until more Latino voters could be registered.. The latino population of the PUSD is now about 32%. The Latino population of the students in the PUSD is about 56%. The Latino PROPERTY OWNERS who pay property tax, is…   more ›

Thanks Roberta, I've heard you guys say this several times, and it is worth repeating. I keep forgetting to mention this, and it is worth noting, because voters who have not looked at the map in the media or the districting task force will not get to look at it in the sample ballot when they are voting.   more ›

Who Would Represent Altadena if PUSD Districting Plan Passes?

The task force working on a plan to move PUSD to electoral districts has to decide on a couple of issues that would greatly affect incumbent PUSD board members' ability to run for a future district seat.

At a Saturday meeting of the task force that is drawing up a plan to move Pasadena Unified School District to electoral sub-districts, the group dealt with a delicate issue: how to schedule future elections in a way that would allow current board members to have a chance to run for a seat in the future. The plan that is being discussed by the PUSD Districting Task Force would change the current system where each PUSD board member represents all of the voters in the district, and split the area into seven sub-districts, each represented by its own board member. If the plan were passed it would cause two kinds of problems for current board members: first, in some cases more than one board member would live in the same district, making it …
