Update: The permit was approved by the County Regional Planning Commission on Wednesday morning. Original: The Altadena Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to conditionally support the county granting a permit to serve alcohol at a proposed Indian restaurant at the northeast corner of Altadena Drive and Washington Boulevard. The restaurant is part of a proposed 5,000 square foot retail building that would replace an existing structure that once housed a florist at a strip mall at the corner. The owner of the property is Dr. Nirmal Kumar, who runs a medical practice at that location. The new retail building would replace a small outlying building on the spot that used to house a florist.  The permit issue will be discussd by the …

Legislation to Keep Your Facebook Password From Your Boss Introduced

The Password Protection Act of 2012 would the enhance current law to prohibit employers from compelling or coercing employees into providing access to their private accounts.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), along with eleven other co-sponsors, introduced the Password Protection Act Of 2012 last week to hopefully curb employers who require that employees provide access to password-protected accounts, like Facebook and Twitter.  Individual states, including Maryland and California, have already introduced legislation to ban the increasingly popular practice.  In a press release Thursday, Schiff explained why he's backing the Password Protection Act Of 2012, which would protect users across the country: This common sense legislation would prevent employers from mandating that job applicants or current employees disclose confidential passwords to their social networks, like Facebook. Someone's personal page should be just…

New School in Altadena Possible With San Rafael's Planned Closure

With San Rafael Elementary planned to be closed because of seismic hazards, PUSD is looking at options for new schools, including one location in Altadena. The options will be discussed at a public meeting on Thursday.

The Pasadena Unified School District announced last Friday that Pasadena's San Rafael Elementary School will need to be closed in the near future because of earthquake hazards, and the Altadenablog notes today that one of the options the district is discussing is opening a new school in Altadena. The new location that the district announced is the district's service center property, which is located on Woodbury Road across from Jackson Elementary School, according to PUSD spokesman Adam Wolfson San Rafael is slated to be closed as soon as the 2013-'14 school year because of the discovery of new fault lines that run under the school, according to a district press release.  Under state law, the school cannot modernize any buildings within 50…

It seems interesting that a school, San Rafael, which is 95 years old, and has withstood several California earthquakes could be scheduled for closure. The older buildings were built to last! I am a LAUSD teacher working at a brand new school where the ceiling just collapsed two weeks ago. Let's face it, the older buildings were built better, with stronger materials and better labor, if it wasn't…   more ›

Metro Invites Public Participation in Open Houses on 710 Freeway

Six community forums are scheduled May 17-24 on extending the 710 Freeway. The closest meeting to Altadena is in La Canada Flintridge.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Caltrans are scheduled to hold community forums this week through May 24 to facilitate a public discussion about various “alternative concepts” to the proposed extension of the 710 freeway into the Los Angeles area. The forums, which are part of the so-called “Alternative Analysis phase of the SR-710 Study,” according to the Metro website, are aimed at “bridging the gap” in this freeway from Long Beach. The idea is to relieve congestion and enhance traffic mobility, particularly that of cargo-laden trucks from the Long Beach port, in the study area. The alternative concepts, two of which are graphically represented in the attached images, include: • Bus Rapid Transit • Light Rail Transit • …

State Senate Candidates Call For New Representation

The candidates of the 25th Senate District discuss their platforms during Thursday’s forum.

In a newly formed 25th Senate district, two of the three candidates vying for a place on the November ballot championed a new order of representation in Sacramento during a candidate's forum in Glendora last Thursday. Republican Senate candidate Gil Gonzales and Democratic candidate Ameenah Fuller discussed their views on topics important to local voters, including education, taxation and redevelopment. Carol Liu, the Democratic incumbent for the current 21st Senate District and current representative of Altadena was in a budget meeting in Sacramento and could not attend Thursday evening’s forum, according to her assistant. The new 25th district includes Altadena, Pasadena and South Pasadena, and stretches both east and west along the …

Body Removed From Desert Cave Confirmed as Guillermo Pino, Jr.

Pino's body was brought out of an Anza-Borrego mud cave by mine rescuers Tuesday night.

Update 1:10 p.m. Thursday: The Medical Examiner's Office today confirmed that the body was indeed that of Guillermo Pino, Jr. The family of missing San Diego hiker Guillermo Pino reported finding the body down a 60-foot shaft in the Arroyo Tapiado area on Saturday. Pino, 24, went missing April 8 while hiking in the area with his family. Authorities suspended the search for Pino by April 17 due to the difficulty of working in the rugged, unstable terrain, locally known as "the Badlands." However, Pino's family continued the search. KNX Radio in Los Angeles, a CBS affiliate, reported Tuesday that a private investigator, Bill Garcia of San Diego, helped the family by lowering a camera down the shaft into a mud cave, and that family members …

Candidates for Local Assembly Seat Present Views in Forum

It’s a different ballgame in the June 5 primary, with newly-drawn geographic boundaries for the 41st District and an open primary that erases party lines.

Five candidates for the 41st Assembly District lined up to share their views in a forum sponsored by Southern California Public Radio (KPCC) and the Pasadena Sun on Wednesday night in the Crawford Family Forum.  Though they touched on a variety of issues, the climate for business in California and local transportation were recurring themes in their responses to questions from the audience.  Bill Kisliuk, city editor of the Pasadena Sun, moderated the discussion. The newly-drawn district includes South Pasadena, Altadena, Sierra Madre, Monrovia, as well as Glendora and several other foothill cities in East Los Angeles County.  A map of it can be viewed at right. The candidates are Michael Cacciotti, mayor of South Pasadena; Edward Colton, …

Chris Holden “a longtime proponent of finishing the 710 Freeway” (quote from previous interview of Mr. Holden) has been pushing for years to complete the 710 freeway for use by the LA/LB ports cargo trucks. He doesn’t care if it is a surface freeway or tunnel he just wants to get it done. Ask yourself: Why is he now fighting to build a toll freeway that will only clog our streets with diverted …   more ›

President Barack Obama changed his tune and officially declared his support for same-sex marriage Wednesday, becoming the first sitting president to do so, according to ABC News. "I've always been adamant that gay and lesbian Americans should be treated fairly and equally," Obama told ABC’s Robin Roberts in a sit-down interview that will air in its entirety on ABC's Good Morning America Thursday. See more about Obama’s same-sex marriage views in a video excerpt here. The President also emphasized that his stance on the issue is personal and he supports states deciding on their own where they stand on same-sex marriage, ABC News reported. Obama the brave! Obama probably just lost NC in the general but from the looks of NC they were a state who's people aren't going to vote for him anyways. I figured the bigots and religious freaks were going to eventually lose this battle anyways, but it is nice to see Obama stand strong right now. Anyway you look at it, our President just took a very honorable stance for giving people rights they…   more ›

PUSD Board Endorses Adjusted Consensus Districting Map

A money-saving version of the Districting Task Force's original consensus map was approved with a 5-2 vote.

Pasadena Unified School Board members voted 5-2 Tuesday night to approve a slightly tweaked version of the task force-endorsed districting map they praised in March, following a storm of heated commentary triggered from a staff report released only days earlier that provided a sudden handful of alternative, incumbent-friendly maps unseen by public eyes. Many people used public comment time to support the task force's consensus map while also questioning the existence of the other maps, or even the intentions of the board itself. "These maps are an outrage," said Peter Dreier, a resident and Occidental professor who called the alternative maps an example of blatant gerrymandering. "This is after 50 meetings, 10 months of work and community …
