5 Things You Need to Know: Art on Palm Event Date Set, Neighborhood Watch Map

Upcoming important events and stories in Altadena

1) If you are looking for a way to celebrate Earth Day a little early this week, today is the Pasadena Earth and Arts Festival at Memorial Park in Pasadena.  The event includes green vendors, earth-friendly product demonstrations, live entertainment and more.  It goes from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and is open to all.

2) The date has been set for the spring version of the , where local artists gather at the tree-lined end of East Palm Street to display and sell their work.  It will be on May 21 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

3) Via Altadenablog, which reported it Friday, there is a new mapping tool at altadenaalert.org which has a map of all the Altadena neighborhood watch groups and info on how to join them.

4) A group of legislators looking to honor local businesswomen have extended the deadline for the applications, perhaps because they have not yet gotten enough submissions.  The award is being offered by State Senator Carol Liu (D-La Canada Flintridge) and Assemblyman Anthony Portantino (D-La Canada Flintridge), who both represent Altadena.  There is certainly no shortage of local businesswomen worth honoring, so if you know one, contact Liu's office at 818. 409.0400 or www.senate.ca.gov/liu or Portantino's office at 626.577.9944 or  www.asm.ca.gov/portantino.

5)  The Pasadena Star News ran a profile Friday of an Altadena woman who recently celebrated her 105th birthday.  Ethel Shoebridge Engstrom was born in Canada in 1905 and moved to Pasadena in 1926.  Read more here
