Chihuahua Chases Bear Up a Tree

Chaney Trail area resident Alice Sarkisian Wessen has a dog whose boldness intimidated a local wild bear.

Altadena resident Alice Sarkisian Wessen has a chihuahua named "Husky" whose name apparently gives him the boldness of a wolf-sized dog: On Tuesday night Husky chased after a bear that was trying to get into Wessen's garbage can, resulting in the bear retreating up a tree.

Wessen's photo, on right, show the bear hiding in the tree after Husky's "attack."

Like , Husky showed absolutely no fear in going after the bear, Wessen wrote in a local email group: "The bear ran from Husky the Chihuahua. Swear to god that pint sized idiot treed the bear."

She added in an email to Altadena Patch that Husky was rescued from the Pasadena Humane Society and usually spends his evenings sleeping under the covers in bed with his owners.

Wessen also noted that the bear bolt affixed to her garbage can held, and the bear did not get in.

Though it is impossible to tell whether a bear in one sighting is the same as in another, there have been several recent sightings in that area, and one at JPL, not so far away:

Even though their barks are worse than their bites......they are still ferocious!

Leslie, you are a super seamstress I understand. How about using your own super powers to start making Altadena super capes for our own obviously special breed of Chihuahuas? Maybe there would even be a demand from Pasadena wannabees.

Yes, first Paco, now Husky. You're safe as long as there's a Chihuahua around. They're 100 pounds of dog in a 10 pound bag. I had a roommate a few years ago that had a Chihuahua that was blind in one eye, but she could hear a pin drop. If a stranger even walked past the house, she was the first to know, and would bark like she was a Great Dane (well that's what SHE thought she sounded like, anyway...)
