Montecedro Senior Living Breaks Ground This Summer

Parent company Episcopal Communities & Services updated the Altadena Town Council on its progress Tuesday night.

After years of planning, MonteCedro senior living community is set to break ground in late summer, parent company Episcopal Communities & Services announced at Tuesday’s Altadena Town Council meeting and in a statement.

MonteCedro must have 70 percent of its residences—130 homes—reserved prior to construction and anticipates achieving that goal. They also plan to host a community-wide block party to celebrate the groundbreaking.

To prepare for groundbreaking and construction, MonteCedro has begun deconstructing the homes along the west side of Crawford Avenue and the north side of Alameda Street. Materials from these buildings, such as wood doors, cabinets and windows, will be donated to the San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity. The non-profit organization will use the materials in its upcoming building projects or sell them to benefit its mission. Additionally, approximately 80 percent of the deconstructed building materials will be sent to a recycling center instead of a landfill.

“During our deconstruction planning, we explored all options available, including relocation of the Crawford Avenue homes,” states Jim Doyle, MonteCedro Project Coordinator. “Upon speaking to local developers, unfortunately, relocating the homes was not a viable option due to their small size and other factors. However, we are pleased to be able to assist Habitat for Humanity in furthering its mission and helping families in the area with these materials.”

To ensure the safety of its surrounding neighbors and school children, MonteCedro has contracted a security company to patrol the property. Crossing guards will be located on Calaveras and Alameda to supervise and monitor traffic flow around the property. Additionally, the senior living community will be working with local schools to educate students on construction science, as well as safety.

MonteCedro will be built by DPR Construction, a nationally-recognized firm with offices in Pasadena, Calif. Once complete, the community will employ more than 100 people in various positions, including nursing, administration, dining services and maintenance.
