UPDATED: Power Outage Leaves 1,800+ SoCal Edison Customers in the Dark

The outage began about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, affecting more than 1,800 residential and business customers in the Sierra Madre area.

Gusty winds triggered a widespread power outage in the San Gabriel Valley, leaving more than 1,800 Southern California Edison customers without power in the Sierra Madre area Tuesday night, according to the utility company.

The problem was reported about 4:30 p.m. Dec. 18 near Mountain Trail and Alegria avenues, according to the SCE outage map.

As of 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, 1,855 customers were affected by the outage, and crews were continuing to assess the damage, which was noted as being caused by "storm conditions," later described as wind-related issues.

Power was expected to be restored by 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the utility company.

SCE spokeswoman Mashi Nyssen said widespread outages had impacted more than 17,000 customers in its service area from Anaheim to the Los Angeles-Ventura county line. Among the hardest hit areas was the San Gabriel Valley, particularly in San Gabriel, Sierra Madre, Arcadia and Monrovia, she added.

Also affected were parts of Inglewood, Huntington Beach and Quail Valley, Nyssen said, adding that all of the outages were wind-related.

Nyssen warned anyone who sees downed power lines to stay away from them and immediately call 911. She also advised customers to keep flashlights handy and to avoid using candles during outages.

I was at Arnolds last evening at around 5:30 or so buying batteries, etc. I was told that the Sierra Madre school was without power and they still had kids there. A man had come in and purchased a lanteran totake back to the school. I got the last one. Thankfully, our power went out for a minute or so.

P.S. I also heard while at Arnold's that someone ran into a tree and the tree toppled over on the vehicle. Don't know if that was rumor or not.

I live on Highland Ave. E. We always seem to be the first to lose power and last to get it back. We are currently still without - one of 8 customers remaining in Sierra Madre still without power.

Got the power back! I think that means that Sierra Madre is fully powered now...
