SCE Upgrades and Hiking Altadena

UPDATE - Access to or on local trails may be affected by Southern California Edison upgrades, August to September.

This, from Paul Klein of Southern California Edison:

SCE has posted trail signs at various locations in the general area to warn recreational users about potential, temporary delays they may experience when construction activities are in progress.

  • For safety reasons, construction crews will ask recreational users to wait at various locations where recreational trails cross SCE’s right-of-way only when wire stringing activities are in progress
  • These temporary delays will usually last between 10-15 minutes
  • Most (but not necessarily all) will occur Monday through Friday during normal construction hours, which are from 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.
Impacted trails include portions of the following trails:
  • Arroyo Seco Trail
  • El Prieto Canyon Trail
  • Devil’s Gate-Arroyo Seco Trail / Mt Lowe Road
  • Altadena Crest Trail
  • Walnut Canyon Trail
  • Mt Wilson Toll Road
  • Other smaller trails that connect to the trails listed above
Earlier:  An on-going Southern California Edison transmission line project may affect your usual hiking routes during the month of August.

According the SCE website, "The Tehachapi Renewable Transmission Project will deliver electricity from new wind farms in the Tehachapi area to SCE customers and the California transmission grid. Consisting of new and upgraded electric transmission lines and substations between eastern Kern County and San Bernardino County, it plays a vital role in meeting California’s renewable energy goal of 33 percent by the year 2020."

In August, hiking trails above the Altadena area will remain open, but there may be times when hikers will require assistance through construction areas. We've contacted SCE for further information.

The sign in this photo is posted at the entrance to the Cobb Estate at the top of Lake.
