Town Council Recap: Farmer's Market in April, Loma Alta Park Update, Black History Parade

The farmer's market is still going forward, but not as soon as originally planned.

The is on target to be opened in April, according to a county Parks and Recreation Department official.

Al Evans, the official, told the Town Council that the department is in contact with two organizations to run the market, one of which is run by Rick Hernandez and Manny Hernandez, who ran the .

The market will be held either on Saturday morning/afternoon or Friday morning/afternoon, Evans said.  He added that he has looked into a Sunday market and cannot find an organization interested in running it.

He said he should have three clear choices for the Town Council to pick from at next month's meeting.

Altadena Town Council chair Gino Sund noted that two people had contacted him to object to the market, and Evans said one had contacted him with concerns over fumes from generators that vendors would use.  However, he noted that the area in Loma Alta has electric outlets and no generators will be necessary.

Other things on the agenda:

  • Captain Steve McLean addressed and reiterated that detectives believe that there are people with information on the crime who have not stepped forward.  He said any calls to the sheriff's station with information will be treated as anonymous.
  • Penny Daniels of the ParksDepartment also mentioned that shooting victim Brandon Jackson was part of a local teen club run by the department and was playing baseball as part of the club last Friday.  She described him as "a good kid."
  • There was discussion about window bars that are scheduled to be removed from a daycare facility at .  Some local community members had complained that the bars make it look like a prison and send the wrong message.  Sund said that the parks and recreation department will be taking them down for a six-month test trial to see if there is any crime in the building.  Lt. Joe Dempsey of the Altadena Sheriff's Station also spoke on the issue and said that only two property crimes have happened in Loma Alta in the last four years and both involved vehicles.
  • A portion of Fair Oaks Avenue will be shut down for the annual Black History Parade on Saturday at 10 a.m.  The parade will start from and go down to Robinson Park in Pasadena, shutting down Fair Oaks from Ventura Street to Mountain Avenue.
  • Officer Miller of the said that the CHP will be stepping up traffic enforcement along Calaveras Street, outside of Eliot Middle School.  He said that there are big problems with double parking, jaywalking and cars impeding traffic.  He noted that during the three weeks he was observing traffic there, a boy was hit by a car, though the car was only going about 5 mph, and the collision resulted in only minor injuries.
