Week in Review

New laws, a public outcry over access to the Pinecrest gate, an update on the Altadena Market which closed last year, an indepth look at crime in Altadena, and much more happened this past week.

MONDAY: There's certainly no shortage of awe-inspiring architecture in Altadena. Check out the by Shira Liff-Grieff about Susanna Dadd and James Griffith, who are changing ecosystems, conserving water and providing a forum for world music on their beautiful oceanview property.

TUESDAY: the 725 new laws that Californians inherited this year, including a ban on trans-fats and a restriction on insurance companies charging men and women different rates for the same coverage.

TUESDAY: Walking the entire length of Altadena Drive can be quite a task. Read Karin Bugge's on how this important street offers the diverse faces and places that make up Altadena.

WEDNESDAY: JPL climatologist Bill Patzert that the rest of this winter's weather will be very difficult to predict, and Dan Abendschein reported that the record storms in late December were the result of arctic oscillation.

WEDNESDAY: If you missed Gregory Middleton's column about the state of the Altadena union, check it out . He argues that not much has changed in the way of politics and economic woes in this sleepy, unincorporated community, which isn't necessarily a good thing.

THURSDAY: There has been a flurry of dialogue among Altadena email listserves about access to the Pinecrest gate after a young woman on Christmas night, which was closed for about a week because of damage to the Mt. Wilson Toll Road. On Thursday Dan Abendschein that the gate is once again open during daylight hours. However, that still doesn't address many people's concerns about access to the gate when it is locked.

THURSDAY: The long-time small market at the intersection of Altadena Drive and Glenrose, which closed in November, is currently undergoing renovation and , according to the new tenant, Bo Tran, who is aiming for a February or March grand opening.

THURSDAY: Although local search and rescue teams don't keep specific records on how often a team responds to certain areas, most agree that Eaton Canyon is the site .

FRIDAY: The Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials are that 26 bus lines be cut, including the 485, which starts in Altadena and connects to Cal State L.A. and downtown L.A.

FRIDAY/SATURDAY: Check out Dan Abendschein's two-part series on crime in Altadena for the year of 2010. The tackles violent crime, in which there was a reduction last year, and the discusses the turbulent year for property crime in Altadena.

SATURDAY: The Sierra Madre gas station scam has so far, prompting local authorities to urge residents of nearby communities to check their bank statements if they may have visited the gas station.

SATURDAY: Local Congress members Adam Schiff (D-Pasadena) and David Dreier (R-San Dimas) of their colleague, Gabrielle Giffords (D-Arizona), as well as the other victims,  in Tucson, Arizona. Giffords remains in critical condition. At least six people, including a girl, a judge and a congressional aide, were killed in the attack by a 22-year-old man. At least 20 more were injured.
