Week in Review

The first fatal shooting of the year, a look at two Altadena candidates running for the school board, the county released the trash collection contract following a PRA request from Patch, and much more happened this week in Altadena.

SUNDAY: If you missed PUSD board member Scott Phelps' response to the the day before comparing per student spending across LA County, check it out . Phelps offered some explanation for high spending in the district, but he called for district officials to lay out a more definitive explanation about where money is spent and why.

MONDAY: Donna Evans on Assemblyman Anthony Portantino's legislation aimed at reducing the prison population in California. His bill would require the state department of corrections to come up with a plan to reduce prisoner recidivism rates by 20 percent within the next four years.

TUESDAY: LA County Public Works about the proposed contract with Athens following a Public Records Act request filed by Altadena Patch late last week. Prior to the request, county officials had said they could not release certain information about the contract, such as the monthly rates for all Altadena residents, until it was on the Board of Supervisors’ agenda.

WEDNESDAY:  County officials a proposed 100-foot AT & T cell phone tower for a Loma Alta Drive wash area. A 100-foot fake pine tree will be installed in the wash.

FRIDAY: Supervisor Michael Antonovich when LA County Department of Public Health officials distributed an Ecstacy Harm Reduction card that outlines what ecstasy is, what the effects are and how to minimize potential harms if a person takes it. Antonovich released a statement condemning the department and called the card "stupid" and contrary to the county's zero-tolerance policy.

SATURDAY: Marietta Kruells, a litigant in the one of the three lawsuits involving the La Vina gated community and issues regarding public access to trails, about her ongoing lawsuit.

SATURDAY: A man was on Palm Street at 10:40 p.m. Saturday night, according to Sgt. Michael Thomas of the Sheriff's Headquarter's Bureau. Neighbors said they heard gunshots go off in the usually quiet residential neighborhood after a party was winding down.
