Period Costume Contest Added to Altadena 125th Birthday

Attendees are encouraged to dress in their favorite decade or as a famous Altadenan from the past.

In addition to food, a jazzy band and more, Altadena’s 125 birthday party will also have a period costume contest, according to event co-organizer Michele Zack of Altadena Heritage.

“The costume contest is pretty loose,” Zac told Patch in an email. “We are encouraging people to come in period dress, but not specifying which decade. Rather, come dressed in your favorite decade!”

Art Deco Entertainment band The Bohemians play “gypsy jazz”, according to Art Deco Entertainment’s website, and Zack said it is “very danceable music from the 20s, 30s and 40s so that might inspire some people.”

You can hear a sample of Art Deco’s Bohemians in the video attached to this post.

For those really wanting to get in the Altadena historical spirit, you can dress as a famous Altadenan from the past.

“Some early stars, Fatty Arbuckle and Mabel Normand, live[d] here, architect Wallace Neff, Gloria Swanson carried on a longish affair with Crane Gartz, so we could even claim her,” wrote Zack.

The winner of the costume contest—likely judged by applause—will receive a photo session and print donated by Photography by Walt.

The Altadena birthday bash will take place Nov. 3 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Farnsworth Park’s Davies Building.

See more information here or on the event's facebook page.

Are you attending the Altadena 125th Birthday? Do you plan to dress up and if so, as what decade or person?

I've read a variety of articles about Patch over the years, including that one. Interesting to seeRead More what media is saying about other media and how often they can get it wrong. Ultimately, I don't consider speculation to be reliable. Thanks for weighing in, Marty.

I think the main issue is the lack of the comment stream - you could see what people were talkingRead More about, and you were often drawn in - and could find the article simply by clicking on the comment. It was the main advantage AltadenaPatch had over AltadenaBlog - much more engaging. No more.

Lisa I am actually holding back, because my comment was up front for two days, and I don't want toRead More look like a hog. As for user friendly....well, maybe. But as with any major revamp, after the foreign feel to navigating, usually the new way feels comfortable eventually. I am not sure either way yet.

And no one is commenting on any stories anymore. This is because the new format is not userRead More friendly.
