Library Preparing to Provide E-Books

Readers should be able to access the Altadena Library's online collection starting Sept. 1.

Anyone with an e-reader and an card should be able to access the library's new collection of eBooks when Sept. 1 comes, according to a release from the library.

“After many requests, we are delighted to finally be able to offer e-books to our public," said Library Director Barbara Pearson in a released statement. "The exponential growth of popularity is understandable since this media is so convenient, especially for people with smart phones and other such devices."

The devices mentioned in the release are iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone, Sony Reader and the Nook from Barnes and Noble. Accessibility for Kindle users should be available within a few months, according to the library.

Pearson added that the first year of electronic offerings will include roughly 250 titles, but there are plans for the website to offer access to more than 2 million items from a number of free websites.

The focus of those first 250 titles will be in the popular fiction and mystery genres, along with some history titles. Residents voted through an online survey, according to Laureen McCoy, who is in charge of ordering the online books.
