New Frame Shop MERGE Features Local Artists

A husband and wife used their creative gifts to open the store in the Amy's restaurant complex.

Ian Wilkins and his wife Denise are both artistically inclined so when the right idea came along for the two to join forces in an Altadena business, they seized it.

"We were getting something framed at a local frame shop (not to be named) and were sticker shocked,” Ian told Patch via email. “I said that I could probably build this frame for next to nothing and with my wife's skill we could make it look a heck of a lot better than what was being offered at a fraction of the price. So we decided to join our expertise and that is what became...MERGE.”

Ian has built high-end furniture for over 30 years while Denise is an award-winning finisher.

In addition to frames, MERGE provides restoration, canvas stretching, and design. In their private room, MERGE staff can also help patrons pick the right frame and mats for their special piece, Ian shared.

“Our goal at MERGE is to provide the customer with old time customer service and have them leaving with a smile and a positive experience,” Ian noted.

And since a frame and a work of art go hand-in-hand, MERGE showcases one local artist’s work each month in their front room. The artist pays nothing and receives all profits from the sale of any pieces sold.

MERGE also has an event to showcase each month’s featured artist. Saturday (April 13) they will show the art of local Ken Dougherty from 6-10 p.m. Wine, coffee and water will also be provided at the free event.
