Time to Re-Write Local Business Standards?

Yikes! What can be done to help local businesses battle county codes?

Hi readers!

Wow! Another week, another Altadena business cited for violating an LA County sign/advertising ordinance. More than ever, store front business owners in town need to be aware of the rules, codes, ordinances etc. that govern businesses up here.

Local business owners are being nickel & dimed (er, make that thousands of nickels & dimes) for conditional use permits (CUP) and hearings, temporary use permits (TUP) or other corrections where the store owner has to pay to adhere to "the code". In turn, this puts a squeeze on our local store front businesses. We've all read about the trials and tribulations of businesses who've received a "notice of violation" letter.

Will residents stop complaining about murals, sandwich signs, music and food trucks? Likely not. Webster's , Coffee Gallery . Temporary sandwich signs have been pulled inside and Patticakes has .

Various civic groups in town plan to review business district (Lake Ave & West Altadena) standards &/or Altadena's Community Standards. Calls to incorporate, so Altadena can control it's own business destiny, have again been called for. Where do we go from here?

If you feel the county's standards for business are too restrictive, if you think inspectors are too "quick on the trigger" to write up a code violation, let us know. What changes would YOU make to the Altadena Community Standards to help local business?
