What the Chamber's Survey Says About Altadena Shopping Habits

Now that we have some insight into Altadena's shopping behaviors, what do we do?

"What to do now?" This is what I thought to myself after reviewing the results of the Altadena Business Survey at the Chamber's mixer last night.

Those present saw data that was collected over many months via an online survey.  Respondents told us their income, where they shop, what types of businesses they'd like to see in Altadena, where they shop in Altadena along with other shopping trends.

The main goal of presenting this material was so local business owners can use the information to better market their business & services to the community. Nearly 75% of respondents told us that they shop in Altadena only 1 to 2 times per week. That sounds low although one could argue that many families only have time to go shopping anywhere once or twice per week. For example, I grocery shop once a week and maybe make a trip for various other supplies once per week. Still, I'm sure local business owners would like  to see more of us, more frequently,  in their stores or using their services. "What to do now?"

We found out that the 3 closest Trader Joes (La Canada, Hastings Ranch & So.Lake) are patronized frequently by those of us in the 91001. That shouldn't be shocking. A nice surprise was that Super King held it's own against the big guys....coming in at #5 (out of 10) of the most shopped at grocery store. However, the bell for an Altadena TJ's still tolls. "What to do now?"

41% of survey takers asked for a coffee house (about the same percentage as those who want another grocery store).  53 people asked specifically for a Starbucks. Meanwhile, Coffee Gallery was listed as the 5th most shopped at business in Altadena. "What to do now?"

Part of the answer to this and other questions raised can be answered by those Altadena business stakeholders as well as residents.  Local merchants, home based businesses, professional service providers and business property owners will need to meet together with local civic groups to develop a course of action. By doing so, we'll be able to find the common ground needed to speak with one voice when making recommendations to the county regarding issues such as signage, parking and permits. Only by addressing these and other concerns will we begin to pave a path; allowing local merchants and those interested in opening  retail in 91001 the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Residents can get into the act as well. Do you have business connections that could help improve the retail landscape in town? Maybe you've always thought of opening a shop of your own. Make your voices heard at local civic group meetings.
