Updated: Lost Angeles Forest Backpacker Found Unharmed, Will Continue Hike

The man has been lost for about 30 hours, according to authorities

Updated: The backpacker was found unharmed at 7:20 p.m. Friday evening on the North Fork trail by search and rescue teams, according to Sgt. Debra Herman of the Altadena Sheriff's Station.  He had decided not to meet up with his friend for some reason, Herman said, but was not injured in any way.  He plans to continue his hike today, she said.

First Update: According to Lt. Jacobs, the command post for the lost hiker has been set up at Newcomb's Ranch, the mountain bar and grill on Highway 2 that is located close by the trail areas mentioned below.

Jacobs also said the lost man is a backpacker who has been hiking for about 30 days, which makes it likely he has been trekking on the Pacific Crest Trail, which goes through the area.

She said he was reported missing after a fellow backpacker who was supposed to meet up with him in the area told the police he has missed their rendevous time by about 30 hours.

Second Update: David Castillo, a cook at Newcomb's Ranch, said the backpacker's partner had shown up at the bar and grill earlier and called about his missing partner.  He said he did not know if the pair were through hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail or not.

Third Update: Rescuers are preparing a team for a night search and are already planning ahead for more operations in the morning.  According to Jacobs, there are teams on the Palmdale side of the mountains looking as well.  Searchers are looking on several different trails in the area.

Original: Local search and rescue teams are looking for a lost 57-year-old male hiker who has been missing for about 30 hours, according to Lt. Jacobs of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Altadena Station.

Jacobs said she was uncertain of the location of the hiker as the call for rescue has just come in.

She said Crescenta Valley search and rescue teams are working on the rescue.

Calls on the police scanner channels indicates that the Sierra Madre Search and Rescue team is also being called in, and the locations "Buckhorn" and "Cooper Canyon" were also mentioned.  The "Three Points" trailhead were also mentioned.

Those locations are in the higher elevations of the San Gabriel mountains off of the Angeles Crest Highway.
