Community Corner

National Night Out Brings Community Together (Photo Gallery)

Altadenans came out to Farnsworth Park on Tuesday evening for burgers, potluck and a chance to dunk the Captain.

National Night Out is designed as a sort of user-friendly way to fight crime.  It’s an opportunity for members of law enforcement and the people they serve to get to know each other in a casual setting.

Tuesday night’s event at was successful in getting deputies and community members talking to each other and having fun together.

Capt. Steve McLean good-naturedly took his (followed by Dep. LaMark Williams) while Altadena kids demonstrated their terrific pitching arms.

The event was co-sponsored by the , California Highway Patrol, and the Altadena Fire Station.  Volunteers from Altadena Mountain Rescue, the Mounted Posse, Disaster Communications Service, and the Sheriff’s Support Group of Altadena also showed up, along with representatives of Rep. Adam Schiff, Asseemblyman Anthony Portantino and Atty. General Kamala Harris.

Capt. McLean spoke briefly before taking his place in the dunk tank.  He said National Night Out tells people, “The community of Altadena will not tolerate crime. Period.”

He reminded the crowd that the Altadena Sheriff’s Station saw a 36 percent decrease in violent crimes over the past year, the biggest decrease in the county.  Fourteen months ago, residential burglaries averaged 35 to 40 per month, he said, while in July there were only three for the 12,000 homes in Altadena.

“The reason we’ve done so well in reducing crime is you’ve decided you’re going to partner with the Sheriff’s Department,” McLean said.  “I’m so proud of what this community has done.”
