Five Acres' Children's Guild to Host Open House on March 6

Opportunities abound
for those seeking meaningful volunteer work that would make a difference in the
lives of children.

Five Acres Children’s
Guild
, a local service group dedicated to advancing
Five Acres’ mission and vision, will host an Open House and
orientation meeting at 6 pm on Thursday, March 6, at Five
Acres’ Zeilstra Research and Training Center, 747 W. Mountain View Street,
Altadena.  Parking is located behind the building, and street parking is
also available. The event is open to all interested individuals.

“What I find most
rewarding about the Children’s Guild, is the opportunity to team up with other
amazing, caring adults, and combine our energies to bring joy into the lives of
children who desperately need happiness and hope,” said Michele Dooley,
President, Five Acres Children’s Guild.

Members of the
Children’s Guild also develop and implement programs that directly support the
children of Five Acres and help increase public awareness, volunteer and
financial support.  Guild volunteers work directly with the children in
three out of seven on-campus cottages each month, forming consistent and
meaningful relationships. Activities include: playing sports, creating arts and
crafts projects, cooking meals, making jewelry and holding dance parties, to
name a few. The Children’s Guild is looking for additional members with the
goal of being able to sponsor more children.

Guild members meet
monthly to discuss upcoming events, cottage activity schedules, Birthday Angels
program and introduce new members. In addition, they host a monthly on-campus
cottage activity and each treat the children to an off-campus activity each
quarter. Past outings have included: Kidspace Museum, Griffith Park
Observatory, the California Science Center and a local Halloween carnival.

Five Acres is a
leading nonprofit organization providing successful solutions that ensure
safety, well being and permanent homes for children and their families.
Services include residential care and education, a non-public WASC accredited
school, mental health services in homes and schools, foster care, adoptions and
domestic violence prevention programs.

Five Acres’ successful
programs have a measurable impact on nearly 6,500 children and members of their
families and support networks that are served each year. Since 1888, Five Acres
has touched the lives of more than 100,000 children and families.
