Family Promise of San Gabriel Valley Held Third Annual Empty Bowls

Family Promise of San Gabriel Valley held its third annual Empty Bowls fundraiser atthe Sierra Madre United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 26. Each attendee selected a beautifully handcrafted soup bowl made by local artisans, including Rio Hondo students, and then enjoyed a delicious soup donated by local restaurateurs.

“Rio Hondo College students started making bowls on their own time because they care about the community and understand the importance of giving,” said Associate Professor Robert Miller of Rio Hondo College Arts & Cultural Programs. “We are proud that Rio Hondo students donated more than 50 bowls this year.”

All proceeds went to Family Promise, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that brings local faith congregations together to shelter and feed homeless families, provide them social support, and help them find employment and housing. All participants were able to take their soup bowls home as a reminder that some people have an empty bowl not by choice, but by unfortunate circumstances.
