Altadena Backyard Citrus Grower to Join Farmers Market

Old Soldier Citrus will be the latest local farm to join the Altadena Farmers Market, which meets Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Loma Alta Park.

Altadena resident Emily Green will begin selling citrus fruits grown in her backyard starting this Wednesday at the Altadena Farmers Market, according to a post on the market Facebook page.

The booth, called Old Soldier Citrus, will sell Valencia oranges, Eureaka and Meyer lemons, Bixby tangerines and Muscat grapes according to the page.

Green writes about gardening at the Los Angeles TimesĀ and blogs atĀ http://chanceofrain.com/.

According to the post on the farmers market page, she grows the citrus on old ranch lands with a set-up designed to use as little water as possible.

The farmers market meets every Wednesday at from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

It's great to have a farmers market here in Altadena! Would the community like to see a booth from a local landscape supply center? Flagstone, organic compost, soil ect.

Andy, that would be really cool. I'm not sure if there is a local supplier or someone else who could do this, but if so, seems like it would be a hit.

Thanks for the reply Dan! I work at Stone/Yard here in Altadena. We are located on W. Woodbury, just west of Jims Burgers. We are looking for better ways to get involved in the community. Check our blog for more info on us. Would like to hear what you think. www.sylcaltadena.blogspot.com

Oh yeah, I've seen you guys before... in fact I noticed the yard when I was driving over to the Walmart meeting at Jackson Elementary last week and was thinking it would be worth stopping in. If you email met at dan.abendschein@patch.com I'd be happy to give you the contact info for the market manager at Altadena - no idea if they are interested in landscaping there, but you could ask.

Wow, I had no idea you guys were there. I wish we had an Altadena business directory. I will have to stop by and see you guys. I've always dreaded driving out to Home Depot and OSH when you guys have been right there all this time. Wow.

Well Angela, we do have one here at Patch. Online only, but check it out and see what you think: http://altadena.patch.com/directory

Excellent!!! Just found another one. Thank you.

That would be cool! An alternative to La Canada Stone, which is south of Muir and miles away from customer service.

Nice to have a truly local vendor. It was good to see the Muir kids out last Wednesday, but they weren't selling (maybe Muir Ranch isn't certified). Most of the vendors come quite some distance.
