Mama Bear and Two Cubs Napping in Kinneloa Mesa Tree (Photos)

A homeowner in the unincorporated Kinneloa Mesa area east of Altadena found a mama bear and two cubs in his driveway early Thursday morning.

LOS ANGELES COUNTY - A man in the foothills  north of Pasadena went out to get his paper early Thursday morning and nearly ran into a mama bear and two cubs standing in his driveway.

The bear and two cubs decided to stick around. At 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning, they had climbed up into a nearby tree and were napping.

The home owners where the bears have checked in for their nap have never seen the animals before in the area, according to Mark Hammerstrom, the son-in-law of the couple who live on Edgecliff Lane in Kinneloa Mesa. Hammerstrom was admiring the dozing bears Thursday morning at the same time Patch was.

Kinneloa Mesa is an unincorporated foothill area accessed of the eastern segment of New York Drive, just east of Altadena - it is served by County Sheriff's Department deputies from the Altadena Sheriff's Station.

According to a deputy on the scene, the State Fish and Game Department was called, but officials told the Sheriff's Department that since the area is considered a natural one, they could not remove the bears.

Nobody tell Fish and Game, for God's sake.

Well, the news channels have found the bears. and we have helicopters hovering over mamma and babies. What odds do you give their chances of escaping this without being shot with a sedative and shipped out of their habitat? If we're going to have the privilege of living in these hill, we need to take a responsible attitude toward the wildlife that predated us. That means leaving them alone unless they pose a true danger. Mamma and babies would have been fine without those helicopters.

Dan, why would the sheriffs call fish and game? please tell me the homeowner didn't ask them to have them removed...
Dan Abendschein (Editor) May 03, 2012 at 06:59 PM
Khadija, not that I know of. Likely they call Fish and Game as a standard procedure for advice.

Choppers, really? Doesn't our 2nd amendment grant us the right to arm bears?
Patricia May 03, 2012 at 07:51 PM
Let them sleep. They'll leave when they are no longer tired. We invade their homes and people wanna cry when they come out to welcome you.

Great pictures of Momma and Babies. I really hope everyone just leaves them alone. You really don't want to mess with a Momma Bear.

Too bad we gave them so much attention, cute as they are. Hope they can find a more restful place to relax.

After the mountain lion fiasco last week, fish and game would be the VERY last people I would call...they just like to shoot things.

Great shots, Dan!

Thanks Revvell - it was nice and quiet and peaceful when I was there this morning. Not so much since then, I gather.

1) More cats and dogs are being eaton for dinner. But gee, simply knowing that Lions and bears are are increasing makes us feel good about ourselves. 2) A lion was trapped, tagged, and re-released in Griffith Park four weeks ago. 3) A bear was sighted by a group of seven Sirra Club hikers last week. Bears were pretty much wiped out of the SanGabriels then reintroduced some decades ago. Nature is the most beuriful thing that can,t be reproduced by man. also,The human brain is the most complicated thing in the universe. But that does not mean that all wild animals should be in the same spot as all humans. So far, except for an increase of pet dinners, no big catastrophe yet, but this raod we are on will increase the problems. Simply look at where it is going. The sierra clubs goal is to connect the Santa monica, the Verdugo's, and the San gabriels, so that all the wild animals can easily go and populate all of it. So, as thousands picnic in Griffith Park, in the middle of a large city, any animal may be in the park.. Problems will multiply. Even if you like this idea, just last week two lions were killed in two days. One was run over, and one was shot. If your first love is for people, animals, or both, keep both safe and don,t just bring all the lions and bears around just so we can feel good about ourselves. If you are really brave, google: agenda 21. Read what this 1992 U.N. agreement means. Then you decide what you want Marty

After reading the other posts above, I really don,t want to throw a wet blanket on the blog. I just want to look at what the road ahead might look like, Thanks, Marty

I just heard on NPR that no action is being taken regarding the bears. They are hoping they will return to the woods tonight.

Since when is foul language tolerated on Patch, even if it is in Spanish?
Dan Abendschein (Editor) May 04, 2012 at 04:03 PM
@Lorraine - It isn't. I had not noticed before, but I have removed the comment now. Thanks, D

Where I live it happens all the time everywhere around you...Putting a tree fort in this summer... all you have to do is put tabasco sause and red hot pepper around the bottom of the tree maybe some amonia usually that will keep them from climbing the tree...You could also plantsome marigolds all arount the area at the bottom of the tree..

......has got to be one of the most peaceful photo's I have seen. Leave the bears ALONE!, they're bothering NO ONE! Good God, they can't even climb a tree and get some sleep without HUMANS MOLESTING/HARASSING THEM!!

Have you ever tried to sell something online? I have attempted to sell a lot of different things from handmade crafts to used kid’s clothes and toys. I’ve used eBay, Etsy, Craigslist and even joined local Facebook groups for buying/selling goods. It almost always ends up being way more work than it’s worth. After finding Ubokia, everything is so much easier. This Craigslist alternative makes buying and selling items so much easier, quicker and more fun. Plus, it’s FREE to join! No Dan. It became a media circus. Poor mama wanted to come down and take care of her kids but she was afraid of all those idjits trying to get as close as they could. What they seem to forget is that all she's got to do is become irritated enough to come down out of that tree and take a few people out ~ cameras and all. They they'd blame her and shoot her rather than idjits who are supposed to have enough sense to not be there.

Oh, Great article! Age is nothing but only a number of candles on your cake. My husband is 58 years old (almost 20 years older than me). He turned out to be everything I wanted, adventures, protective, generous and kind. I felt very blessed and fortunate to have met him on ~~MY NAME ~~~(search it )。 It’s the best place to seek May December romance. Maybe you wanna have a try.
