MonteCedro Hosting Public Jazz and Gelato Event

Developers of the MonteCedro senior home project at 2212 N. El Molino Avenue are hosting a public event at their gallery in Pasadena.

Episcopal Communities & Services, the company working on the MonteCedro senior housing development in Altadena, is hosting a public event catered by Altadena's with a musical performance from the Allan Wasserman Jazz band.

The events will be held on July 17 and July 24  at 5:30 p.m. at the MonteCedro Presentation Gallery, 153 E. Holly St., Pasadena.  Those interested can RSVP on the MonteCedro website

The event is outdoors but anybody interested in MonteCedro's plans for the Altadena development can go inside the gallery to check them out.

Bulgarini's will serve a variety of gelato flavors.  The jazz band, headed by outgoing Altadena Town Council member Allan Wasserman will be playing tunes from jazz musicians such as Sonny Rollins, Miles  Davis, Charlie Parker, Oliver Nelson and Horace Silver.

MonteCedro's planned Altadena development is at 2212 N. El Molino Avenue at the vacant lot that once housed the William A. Scripps Home for Aged People.  The Scripps home was closed in 2007 after Episcopal acquired it with the intent of starting a new development on the lot.

The project was delayed, and later scaled back, as a result of financial issues and dropping real estate prices.  The latest information provided by Episcopal indicates that the .

I'm the pastor of Altadena Baptist Church, which is directly across from the site. In the first planning phase, before the financial difficulties derailed the project, we were assured that there would be affordable units where local residents who had only Social Security income could hope to live. Is this still the case? We need to know this before we publicly endorse your current project. Thank you. Rev. George Van Alstine

My Mother lived at Scripps until she passed in 1989, it was a wonderful experience for her and only 1 1/2 blocks from us. Last I heard Monte Cedro was supposed to "break ground" in June of 2012, what are the current plans? The huge lot is an eyesore, but someone planted California Popoy seeds through out and we ae currently enjoying the results. Linda Moore

A MonteCedro shmoozfest to garner good will from the community for their luxury senior condo high-rise gated community. Thank God the developers have been forced by the economy to scale down what was once a massive project which would have overwhelmed the neighborhood. Let's hope the developer will not build one or two high rise buildings in order to leave vacant land to expand in the future. Instead, it is hoped that the developer will adopt a building plan that encompasses low profile structures which will blend in with the surrounding neighborhood. Also, the developer advertises that this will be a gated community. This La Vina-esqe approach sends the message that MonteCedro's strategy for dealing with neighborhood problems is to isolate itself from the neighborhood. This approach sends a negative message to the neighbors surrounding the facility, and perpetuates an "us vs them" mentality. Instead, MonteCedro should maintain the same open environment as did the Scripps Home, with no fences and no gates, with gardens for all to enjoy. It is hoped that MonteCedro will forget about the fences and gates, and instead decide to become an active member of the surrounding neighborhood, which includes looking out for your neighbor and participation in Neighborhood Watch.
