Public Invited to Saturday Altadena Flag Day Celebration

A public ceremony will be held on April 21 and a flag designated by the Town Council to represent Altadena will be raised.

The public is invited to a ceremony on April 21 to raise the new flag selected by a Altadena Town Council committee to represent the town.

The ceremony, which goes from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m, will be co-hosted by the Town Council, Altadena Heritage, the Altadena Chamber of Commerce, the Altadena Historical Society, and the Altadena Community Center Advisory Board.

Local historian Michele Zack will give an illustrated talk on Altadena's history.  Altadena Heritage and the Altadena Historical Society will both hold open house informational sessions at the ceremony starting at 2 p.m, according to Zack.

Elected representatives of Altadena, including County Supervisor Michael Antonovich, Rep. Adam Schiff, Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, and State Sen. Carol Liu will be in attendance.

The flag design pictured at right was designated as the new flag of Altadena by the Town Council's Flag Committee following a . Altadena Patch has requested the voting tallies from that contest on multiple occasions but has not received them.

Why would I go celebrate the creation of an ugly symbol?
Gary Edwards April 06, 2012 at 02:36 PM
a real yawn event

Steve and Gary: Why such hate? I personally think these kinds of events are great for community solidarity. At worst, doesn't hurt anyone.

Sounds like fun. So who 'designed' the flag?
Daniel E. Harlow April 06, 2012 at 04:58 PM
The Town Council ran a contest a while back.

@Hugo - There is some more information in our past story here: http://patch.com/A-pDsf. Most of the designs are based on an existing Altadena city seal, which is the image depicted in the middle of the flag. I am not certain when that seal was developed.

Thanks Dan. I think my question was a little vague. I know there were several submissions made but is someone going to get credit for this new new flag that is being used. I know they used existing elements but someone had to design this version of the flag. Just curious.

never used or hinted at hate..... "yawn" implies boring esp at 2hrs long.

I was hopeful that the Council would go back to the drawing board on the flag. There was so much more interest in other flags that were submitted late and didnt have the chance to get more votes. Also there was a lot of discussion about people wanting a flag that incorporated different elements of multiple flags.

It would be nice if local artists could help with the design of the flag, most artists are very proud of their community and I know that there is a lot of history about our beautifull Altadena that can be used to design the flag. I thank the Altadena Patch for informing us about almost everything that goes on in our community, thanks to them we get more involved on important issues like this one about our flag.

The flag was already picked and so it is too late for this, however it would have been a great idea!

What is the name of the person who designed the flag?
Dan Abendschein (Editor) April 09, 2012 at 06:25 PM
Lisa, it was designed in a Town Council committee chaired by Dr. Sandra Thomas and staffed by members of the community. I've asked for the names and when they met, etc. and have not gotten an answer on that either. But the designs all came out of that committee except for a couple of late entrants that were in the online vote.
