Diet Myths

Diets don't work: Proper nutrition does!

What about diet promoters who say you can lose 10 lbs in a weekend?  Remember that calories in equal calories out and that to lose a pound you have to take away 3,500 calories.  Many products on the market guarantee weightloss.  Some advocate grapefruit juice or vinegar preparations that will "burn" fat away.  Not only is this impossible, but it could also be dangerous to drink acetic acid (the acid contained in vinegar) over extended periods of time.

Not only is it unrealistic to lose quickly lose real weight (as in fat), it can be harmful to lose more than 1 or 2 lbs. per week.  Certain pharmaceutical and herbal preparations can induce the loss of fluid in the body in a process called the diuretic effect.  Along with water, you lose
essential minerals, such as potassium and magnesium.  If you lose enough of these minerals, your blood pressure will rise, your heartbeat will become irregular, and your
kidneys will fail.  Ever year, people are treated in emergency rooms after taking certain weight-loss formulas.  In the past several years, a number of deaths have been assocaited with some of these products.

There are also a lot of popular "fad" diets available today.  They promise that you will lose extreme amounts of weight in an extreme amount of time.  You have to purchase their food which can sometimes become very expensive and the businesses all make millions
and  millions of dollars each year.  The only problem is that once you get tired of eating their "pre-packaged food" which often tastes of cardboard, stop following their plan the weight comes back on sometimes times two.
