167 Mile Per Hour Winds at Henninger Flats?

Several people have noted from government data that 167 mph winds were recorded at Henninger Flats. But one weather columnist doubts the accuracy.

Various media reports around Los Angeles County have cited the highest speed winds during Wednesday's nights wind storm as 97 mph in Whitaker Peak in the San Gabriel Mountains.

However, several Twitter users and others have noted (including a former USC colleague of Altadena Patch) that Bureau of Land Management wind sensors data has listed a peak wind of 167 mph at Henninger Flats, above Altadena, on Wednesday night.

One Accuweather blogger looked at all the data for the West during the current wind events and concluded that would mean that Henninger Flats saw the highest wind of anywhere in the U.S. during this regional wind event.

However, another Accuweather blogger looked at data for other stations in the area and concludes that the Henninger Flats station sensor likely malfunctioned.  He notes that other stations in the area recorded speeds around 60 to 70 mph.
