Brandon Jackson Scholarship Basketball Shootout to be Held Saturday

The public is invited to check out youth basketball, food, drink and raffle prizes on Saturday for an event that benefits a scholarship fund for local youth.

The public is invited Saturday to the Second Annual Brandon Jackson basketball tournament, which funds a scholarship named in honor of John Muir High School student and Altadena resident Brandon Jackson, who was 

The day will include youth basketball, food and drink, and raffle prizes at the from 8am to 8pm at LaSalle High School, 3800 East Sierra Madre Blvd. in Pasadena, according to a release from the event organizer.  Admission is $5 and will go to benefit the scholarship fund.

The scholarship is in honor of , a 17-year-old Altadena resident with college dreams who was shot and killed in February of 2011.  The scholarship will benefit local students headed for college

Last year, scholarships of $2,500 each were awarded to  from John Muir High School and Jared Norsworthy, who attended Marshall Fundamental School, according to the event website.

The event was organized last year by the , in conjunction with the Clergy Community Coalition after a coach of Jackson's came up with the idea to honor him through the scholarship program.

Registration for youth basketball teams is long past, but people who want to support the case can still make a donation. Checks can be made out to First Presbyterian Church Altadena, with an note on the memo line indicating it is for  the "Brandon Jackson Scholarship", and mailed to the church at 2775 Lincoln Ave., Altadena, CA 91001.

Raffle prizes at the event have been contributed by: 20/10 Vision Care, Adobe Design, Altadena Hardware, Eiji's Florist, Family Fashion Clothing, Johnny's Sport Shop, Mota's Mexican Restaurant, Perry's Joint, Standard Ice Cream, Steppe's Barber Shop, Steve's Bike Shop, Toto's Beauty Supply, Wally's Barber Shop, Webster's Community Pharmacy, and Webster's Fine Wine and Liquor.
