Conservancy Issues Fundraising Challenge for Millard Canyon

The Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy is looking for donations to go towards the purchase of a 13-acre open space parcel in Millard Canyon.

The Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy is asking for matching donations to get a $10,000 grant to help purchase a 13-acre parcel in Millard Canyon.

The conservancy has an agreement to purchase the land and keep it as open space.  The land is a valuable wildlife corridor, according to a biological survey done by the conservancy (full disclosure: I volunteer as a docent with the group).

John Howell, the AFC's director, issued the following statement about fundraising:

Our friends at the Eaton Canyon Nature Center have challenged you to help save Altadena's Millard Canyon. The Eaton Canyon Nature Center Associates have pledged $10,000 to help preserve the property, and has asked the local community to match that $10,000 by June 30.

Donate to Save Millard Canyon - ECNCA will match dollar-for-dollar

Millard is a true gem in our foothills -- a densely wooded area with a perennial stream, at the northern edge of Altadena. But it will only stay that way if we act now to preserve it. Doing so would complete the preservation of the entire canyon north of Canyon Crest Road, leaving only two major unprotected canyons in Altadena. To learn more about the land, click here.

I've read a variety of articles about Patch over the years, including that one. Interesting to seeRead More what media is saying about other media and how often they can get it wrong. Ultimately, I don't consider speculation to be reliable. Thanks for weighing in, Marty.

Jessica, The blog system blocks my comments as spam if I try to add a link. Here is the story IRead More read From Business insider, the article is headed: AOL's Grand Human-Heavy Local News Experiment Is Coming To An End From google search many stories on the subject, but it looks like the other news accounts don't have quite the alarming headline as this one.

I think the main issue is the lack of the comment stream - you could see what people were talkingRead More about, and you were often drawn in - and could find the article simply by clicking on the comment. It was the main advantage AltadenaPatch had over AltadenaBlog - much more engaging. No more.

Lisa I am actually holding back, because my comment was up front for two days, and I don't want toRead More look like a hog. As for user friendly....well, maybe. But as with any major revamp, after the foreign feel to navigating, usually the new way feels comfortable eventually. I am not sure either way yet.

And no one is commenting on any stories anymore. This is because the new format is not userRead More friendly.
