County Shelters Discount Senior Pet Adoption

Los Angeles County shelters are offering a discount on fees for adopting pets five years or older in the month of May.

Los Angeles County animal shelters are offering discounted adoption fees for all pets five years or older in May as part of a program called "Super Seniors."

The closest shelter to Altadena is Baldwin Park, which is the facility that stray or lost animals from Altadena are brought to if reported to the county.

The purpose of the promotion is to encourage residents to adopt older pets who often have a harder time finding a home than young animals.

The program press release describes the benefits of senior animals:

Senior animals make wonderful companion pets and are the prime choice for individuals who do not want the responsibility of training and raising a puppy.  Senior pets are also usually more adaptable and integrate well into a new environment.  Senior pets are often house trained, have good manners, and have picked up basic lessons and commands, since most of them have lived with a family.

The flyer on right has the details, including shelter locations.

What a cool program! Every cat I've ever adopted has been an older guy or gal. The only time I've had kittens is when their mama wandered into someone's yard and gave birth. The older ones always seem to be pretty stoked to be rescued, I've found.

We took in one of or two cats when he was 6 or 7. The other one I found as a kitten. The older one definitely made for an easier transition. Older pets = awesome. Of course, so are the young ones.

Pasadena Humane Society has a continuing program called Seniors for Seniors. A grant covers the entire adoption fee for age 60+ folks who adopt pets of ages 5 and up. There's a separate $20 microchip fee.
I adopted my dog, Debbie, through this program. She's cute and an awesome exercise partner and everyone thinks we look way younger than our real ages (snicker).

San Gabriel Valley Humane Society has had a Seniors for Seniors adoption program for years! The $39 adoption fee covers spay/neuter, all vaccinations, and a microchip with free lifetime registration! Senior cat adoptions also include free nail trims for life as well as a FIV/FELV/Heartworm test. Senior dog adoptions also include a free dental. And you get a great goody bag too!

Frank Walsh, Walsh Exterminating in Monrovia (626-359-4712) is EXCELLENT! My gardener got a dozenRead More bites from ground wasps and Frank took care of the nest and they've never returned. We've used him for years for fleas, spiders, wasps, and rats. He's experienced, thorough, neat and best of all, checks the rat traps and disposes of them. Good luck, Rhonda Raulston
