Fancy Food Truck Friday Preview: Return of the Trucks

Sushi burritos, heavy metal burgers, Italian sandwiches and more will be on the menu at Fancy Food Truck Friday on May 11.

A three-month winter hiatus and a rain cancellation now mean that it has been four months since Altadena residents had a chance to gorge on food from gourmet food trucks at the Friday event we now hope will return to being held monthly again.

Fancy Food Truck Friday is scheduled for this week, and there will be some new trucks, some old trucks, and the usual great ambiance.

The event runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday in the parking lot behind the  complex.  As with past events, the mobile petting zoo from one-time Altadena institution Danny's Farm will be in attendance this week.

New to Town

Grill 'em All - This heavy-metal themed burger truck is a curious mix of high brow and low brow ingredients.  Items that are either on the menu or an ingredient on a burger include: fennel seared sausage, cheddar jack filled tater tots, Sriracha, cranberry gastrique, Munchos, duck confit, peanut butter and jelly.  I saw this truck once at a Sierra Madre event but have never eaten there.

Jogasaki Burrito - This sushi truck comes from the line of ubiquitous Asian-Mexican combination experiments.  From the pictures and truck description on the website, it looks like sushi with heavier wraps that make it easier to hold and eat.

Triumphant Returns

Rosa Bella Cucina - I had to double check in the Fancy Food Truck Previews archive to see if this truck had been to a prior event - they show it has not, but then I discovered photographic evidence (shown at right) that the truck has been here before.

I was surprised because I thought I would remember a truck serving such delicious-looking sandwiches. Follow the link above and see for yourself: looks like excellent gourmet Italian sandwiches, from meatball to caprese as well as some Italian pastries, and rice balls, which I have never heard of in Italian cuisine. Consider me intrigued.

The Greasy Wiener - This truck was in attendance at the event last Fall and serves 'Jersey Style Fried Dogs.' I did not go there when they were last here, but as I noted in a previous preview, I'm from Jersey, and I am not sure exactly what a Jersey style hot dog is.  However,  I do recall hot dog served the state generally come with a lot of hard-to-identify sauce, taste really good, and make your stomach hurt afterwards.  Sounds perfect.

The Border Grill Truck-  Another returning truck I have not tried yet.  They serve tacos, quesadillas, ceviche, and more, all with organic long grain rice and beans, according to its website.

A Rockin Ice - This truck is usually parked outside  on Monday afternoons in warm weather months and features enormous helpings of shaved ice on top of vanilla ice cream, too big for this Patch editor, who in all fairness has never really been much of a shaved ice fan.  But the truck seems to have regulars in Altadena and the owner, Thom Uber, is a kind man whom I personally witnessed giving away a free shaved ice to a man who lacked the money to pay.
