Fancy Food Truck Friday Preview: Weather Will Permit

This month's food truck line-up may be familiar to regular readers of this feature... but unlike when these trucks were originally scheduled to be hear, rain is very unlikely Friday.

April was a big month for Fancy Food Truck Friday: the event had been on hiatus for three months, and it would be the first event of the warm season.

Unfortunately, it was also the date of a forecast late-season storm, and though it did not end up raining during the actual hours of the event (I know because I was at Lake at Mariposa eating at the Greenz on Wheelz truck which did make it to Altadena that day) the threat of impending rain as well as some early-morning showers was enough to cancel the event.

April's mix of trucks looked to be a promising one: in addition to the mainstay Greenz on Wheelz, there were several well-known Los Angeles trucks scheduled to show, including Komodo and a cupcake truck featured on the Cupcake Wars TV show.

Why am I mentioning the April trucks?  Because they are scheduled to show up to tomorrow's event.  And I'm willing to bet we don't get a weather cancellation this time.

For those who don't know, the event runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday in the parking lot behind the  complex.  The mobile petting zoo from one-time Altadena institution Danny's Farm will not be in attendance this month.

As always, we bring you our preview of this month's food trucks that will be in attendance below - for those who may have read this column in April, it may look a little familiar.

New to Town

  • Komodo - This is a very well known truck coming to Altadena for the first time.   They serve Asian-themed tacos, one of several trucks that do this.  I've tried their shrimp tacos, which I found very spicy, but good.  They actually have a physical restaurant location in West L.A.  If you love the idea of Asian food served in tacos, you will be very happy at this event, because....
  • Bool BBQ - Also serves Asian-themed tacos, but while Komodo borrows from several Asian cuisines, Bool appears to be all Korean BBQ.  I've never eaten here, but in April I stumbled across a Chinese-themed taco truck and it was delicious, so I'm into the idea at the moment.

Triumphant Returns

  • Nom Nom - This truck appeared at the September event, and I've also seen it at a Sierra Madre event.  It serves banh mi, the delectable Vietnamese sandwich speciality (french bread, meat, shredded carrots, jalapenos and fish sauce).  I can't recall for sure if I have eaten at this truck, but if you have not tried banh mi yet, and want to avoid a trip to Alhambra, I would advise it.  I love the stuff.
  • Greenz On Wheelz - I think this truck wins the award for most appearances at Fancy Food Truck Fridays, and it definitely wins for most visits from Altadena Patch.  In December I believe I ate there two straight nights, first at Fancy Food Truck Friday, then for the Christmas Tree Lane lighting ceremony.  The shredded pork melt and the blue cheese steak wrap are both good buys.
  • Aunties Fry Bread - I like this truck and it is certainly a unique cuisine. According to the truck's website, the owners are from a family of Japanese farmers who developed fried bread recipes from dishes they learned from the Crow people in Montana.  They have fry bread tacos, a flat fried bread with meat, vegetables, and sauce, which were tasty. However, the real standout for me when it was at the event last summer was the dessert bread, which reminded me of a churro.
  • Sweet E's Bake Shop - This is the truck incarnation of a West L.A. bakery that was apparently featured on the Cupcake Wars T.V. show.  I'm not sure what is on the mobile menu, but baked goods featured on the website include an orange creamsicle cupcake and vegan cake pops.
