New Member Selected to Sit on Altadena Town Council

Judy Matthews, a 30 year Altadena resident and local volunteer, will fill the seat until the Town Council's June elections.

The Altadena Town Council voted Tuesday to seat a new council member to fill a vacant seat in a district in the northwest part of Altadena.

Judy Matthews, a resident of Altadena for more than 30, will be the new representative in census tract 4603.01, which runs roughly north of Altadena Drive and west of Fair Oaks Avenue, with its borders the northern foothills and the La Vina development on the north and west side of the district.  The map at right shows the district.

Matthews said she worked in the federal court system for 26 years, and is now retired.

She said she is a volunteer for the Altadena NAACP, and the chair of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Congress of Black Women.

The seat was opened up by a retirement last summer, and was briefly filled by Gene Stevenson, a local volunteer who runs the Altadena Arts Council.  At the Town Council's December meeting it was announced that Stevenson had retired the seat without sitting through a full meeting, and the vacancy has gone unfilled since.

The seat will be open in the Town Council's June election, so Matthews appointed term will only last through the June meeting.  She is free to run for the seat in the June elections, along with anyone else who has lived in the census tract for at least two years and is a registered voter.
