Princeton Student from Altadena Wins Marshall Scholarship

Kyle Edwards, of Altadena, is one of three current Princeton students to win the prestigious Marshall Scholarship.

Three Princeton University seniors, one of them from Altadena, and two alumni are five of 36 American college students awarded 2012 Marshall Scholarships.

Princeton senior Kyle Edwards, of Altadena won the award, along with Christina Chang, Kyle Edwards and Emily Rutherford. The alumni are Samuel Dorison and Alice Easton.

Marshall Scholarships covers the cost of graduate study and living at a British university of the recipient's choice for two to three years.

The Marshall Scholarships were established in 1953 as a British gesture to the U.S. for assistance after World War II under the Marshall Plan. The British government awards scholarships to American students who have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership potential. 

Edwards plans to pursue a doctorate in public health from the University of Oxford, according to the release. She will use her Marshall Scholarship to continue her study of bioethics.

Her research involves a study of the ethics of the fertility industy, where she suggests that 'perverse incentives' sometimes leads to doctors recommending profitable choices over ones that are more medically sound, according to the Princeton press office.

She once held an internship with the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments, helping coordinate and promote the council's housing and homelessness committee.
