Statewide DUI Fatalities Up Slightly Over Last Year

Fatality numbers gathered during the first 36 hours of the Labor Day weekend, authorities said.

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The California Highway Patrol Sunday reported one traffic-related death on Los Angeles County highways during the first 36 hours of this year's three-day Labor Day weekend.

The reporting period began at 6:01 p.m. Friday and concluded today at 6 a.m. During that same reporting period last year, there were three traffic-related fatalities in Los Angeles County, according to a department statement.

Statewide, there were 11 fatalities in the first 36 hours of the Labor Day weekend, compared with 10 during the same period in 2011.

In Los Angeles County, CHP officers arrested 191 motorists on suspicion of drunken driving, down from last year's total of 227. Statewide, the CHP reported 892 DUI arrests, in comparison with last year's 1,008.
