Town Council Recap: Walmart to Present Next Month, Crime Down

The main action item that happened at Tuesday night's Town Council meeting was the appointment of two new Town Council members to fill vacancies on the Council.  Here were some other highlights:

• A scheduled presentation by Walmart representatives was off the docket at their request due to conflicts in scheduling, but will be on the October agenda.  In public comments, resident Marge Nichols, calling attention to a new organization Neighbors Building a Better Altadena, stated “We believe that the Town Council must engage in the Walmart issue,” and urged the council and land use committee to take a leadership role.
• Samuel Estrada from L.A. County Parks and Recreation reported that the Tiny Tots childcare program will to be cut from full time to three hours per day, Monday through Thursday to comply with state law.  In public comments, two women who had children in the program commented on what this cutback will mean to families who rely on the program for childcare and enrichment, and how the program had helped prepare the children thrive.
• The council voted to accept the Education Committee goals and objectives report, but emphasized that while there are concerns over the number of group homes for children in Altadena and how that affects student achievement, this is not an issue that is actionable for the council.
• CHP Community Officer Miller spoke about possible speed limit changes.
• Altadena Sheriff’s Station Operations Lieutenant Duane Allen said violent crime is down in Altadena, with the only shooting since June being an accidental one.
• Altadena Library received a grant for 15 new laptops from Google.
• Sheriff’s Station Support Group of Altadena thanked Altadena Rotary for a $3,500 donation for the summer concert series.
