Tree Grant to Fund Native Tree Seeding in Rubio, Millard Canyons

A $20,550.13 grant issued to the Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy for tree seeding will go towards planting native trees at the groups' property at Rubio Canyon and Millard Canyon as well as in Goss Canyon in La Crescenta, according to a release from the group.

The grant comes from a $1.9 million pool of money from the county to replace trees that were destroyed in last year's wind storms.

To help reforest the areas, the conservancy will germinate seeds from existing native plants in the area and plant them, rather than using nursery tree plantings.

The goal is to grow 250 new trees, including big cone spruce, canyon live oak, coast live oak, California sycamore, California walnut and bigleaf maple.

The money will go to the seeding process as well as irrigation to keep the small trees alive.  The work will be done by the California Conservation Corps, a state organization that employs at-risk youth.
