Fancy Food Truck Friday Preview: Welcoming New Trucks to Town

Friday is Altadena's monthly food truck event and there are some interesting new options this month.

The Fancy Food Truck Friday classic trucks are great - I'll show up for Greenz on Wheelz, Shrimp Pimp or Hungry Nomad any day.

However, this month does offer some great new alternatives that also have piqued my interest - from a Vietnamese menu truck with fusion options, a very authentic-looking Brazillian food truck to one that serves Belgian waffles, the line-up looks very promising.

For those who don't know, the event runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday in the parking lot behind the  complex - the event is organized and sponsored by .  As with past events, the mobile petting zoo from one-time Altadena institution Danny's Farm will be in attendance this week.

New to Town

  • Madoline Grill - This Vietnamese truck appears to have three very authentic dishes (banh mi, bun and Vietnamese salad) before going off the rails with two very interesting fusion dishes (Vietnamese tacos and Vietnamese nachos).  Sounds like a winner to me - best of both worlds.
  • Ta Bom - This is a Brazilian 'lonchera' truck which serves pastel (pastries) with various fillings, sandwiches, beef and chicken straganoff, croquettes and dessert.  It's run by two generations of a family from Sao Paulo, Brazil.
  • Veg it Up - Vegetarians rejoice - if you want to enjoy a burger and fries for once, this is your chance.  The truck serves all meat substitute American classic fast food, fries, 'burgers,' 'hot dogs,' and more.
  • Waffles de Liege - This truck serves Belgian waffles and its owner promises that no frozen or pre-made waffle dough is served to customers.  The truck allows you to customize your own waffle with an assortment of chocolate, ice cream, fruits and nuts.

Triumphant Returns

  • Hungry Nomad - This mainstay of Fancy Food Truck Fridays is the mobile version of the Sasoun Bakery, a family owned and operated Armenian/Lebanese bakery with six locations in Los Angeles.  They have various Middle Eastern dishes as well as some tasty sandwiches.  The Fattoush Salad is really good.
