Fancy Food Truck Friday Preview: Welcoming New Trucks to Town

Friday is Altadena's monthly food truck event and there are some interesting new options this month.

The Fancy Food Truck Friday classic trucks are great - I'll show up for Greenz on Wheelz, Shrimp Pimp or Hungry Nomad any day.

However, this month does offer some great new alternatives that also have piqued my interest - from a Vietnamese menu truck with fusion options, a very authentic-looking Brazillian food truck to one that serves Belgian waffles, the line-up looks very promising.

For those who don't know, the event runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday in the parking lot behind the  complex - the event is organized and sponsored by .  As with past events, the mobile petting zoo from one-time Altadena institution Danny's Farm will be in attendance this week.

New to Town

  • Madoline Grill - This Vietnamese truck appears to have three very authentic dishes (banh mi, bun and Vietnamese salad) before going off the rails with two very interesting fusion dishes (Vietnamese tacos and Vietnamese nachos).  Sounds like a winner to me - best of both worlds.
  • Ta Bom - This is a Brazilian 'lonchera' truck which serves pastel (pastries) with various fillings, sandwiches, beef and chicken straganoff, croquettes and dessert.  It's run by two generations of a family from Sao Paulo, Brazil.
  • Veg it Up - Vegetarians rejoice - if you want to enjoy a burger and fries for once, this is your chance.  The truck serves all meat substitute American classic fast food, fries, 'burgers,' 'hot dogs,' and more.
  • Waffles de Liege - This truck serves Belgian waffles and its owner promises that no frozen or pre-made waffle dough is served to customers.  The truck allows you to customize your own waffle with an assortment of chocolate, ice cream, fruits and nuts.

Triumphant Returns

  • Hungry Nomad - This mainstay of Fancy Food Truck Fridays is the mobile version of the Sasoun Bakery, a family owned and operated Armenian/Lebanese bakery with six locations in Los Angeles.  They have various Middle Eastern dishes as well as some tasty sandwiches.  The Fattoush Salad is really good.

Hungry Nomad is back, a new all-vegi truck AND waffles? Alhamdulillah (Arabic for "praise God") P.S. AND before Ramadan, too...

Is Food Truck Friday the day that businesses outside of Altadena come driving into town and sell their food at the expense of the local mom & pop restaurants. How many local residents get hired for this Food Truck Friday? How much $$ do the food trucks put back into the Altadena economy? Do the Friday Night Food trucks pay a living wage with benefits for a family? Strange how none of the objections to Walmart are even mentioned when the food trucks come to town. Hhmmm, that's probably because of who profits from the food trucks coming to town? What level of cronyism would it be if the business profiting from bringing outside food trucksto town would be the first recipient of a cash mob?

The Cash Mob has nothing at all to do with Food Truck Friday. Why tie it to the Walmart discussion? It is a lovely community event. I think the owners of the food trucks are all small business owners, not part of any conglomerates. I hope that Scott and Lori Webster are not regretting my choice of WFS as our first Cash Mob ! (hopefully not). I will explain this for the last time. I have no connection to Websters. I am not a crony, I may have had two or three conversations with either Scott or Lori Webster in my life. This was a spur of the moment idea I had while standing in the store buying index cards. It is so sad that some have to attach some sort of Machiavellian motivation to this. I wonder what case you will make against next weeks Cash Mob location? They say you should neither explain or defend. I really shouldn't stoop to even answer these charges. But I am afraid people might read this for the first time and that it could impact both events. The two events are completely unrelated. Please go to Food Truck Friday and have a great time! And let's leave the WM discussion out of this thread !!!!!!
