First charitable event of 2013 for PWS Community
The Pasadena Waldorf School's Parent Council has put together a clothing exchange for the week of February 11th. Collecting clothes from the families at the school commenced the week prior to the swap, encouraging adults and children alike to bring outgrown clothing to exchange at the event. This is one more way that the community integrates the Waldorf values of recycling and sharing. At the end of the swap, remaining clothing will be donated to a local charity.
At many points throughout the year, Pasadena Waldorf School students come together to reinforce these important values and provide for worthwhile causes, each experiencing the joy of knowing their class can contribute to a greater good. In the individual classrooms, children often save for a local charity such as a food bank, or sell handmade goods in support of a global charity for children. Recently supported charitable organizations have included the St. James Community Food Locker and Door of Hope, the Pasadena-based non-profit focused on assisting homeless families with children. Students also offered support for the Invisible Children campaign to raise awareness of atrocities committed in Central Africa by the LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army) and offer rehabilitation to rescued child combatants.
Recently, several PWS classes have focused on Pasadena’s Union Station Homeless Services. The Waldorf students prepare and serve meals at the facility, and have organized collections of essential goods or money to support Union Station’s efforts. Currently, parent Rene Chiara is leading the middle-school classes to fundraise, shop, cook and serve meals at Union Station’s Family Center, which houses and supports up to 50 adults and children.
The families of Pasadena Waldorf School remain committed to bettering their community in many ways, from providing service and assistance for worthwhile causes to being good stewards of the environment and leading the march toward a positive future for all today's children.
