Pasadena Waldorf School First Grade Hike

Pasadena Waldorf School's first graders enjoy the outdoors on their first hike of the year in Monrovia Canyon.

The First Hike of the Year for First Graders

Pasadena, CA, October 5, 2012: Blair Manzke led her new class of first grade students on their first hike of the year. Pasadena Waldorf School (PWS)students enjoy numerous hikes at various park locations in the Pasadena and Altadena areas where they interact with nature and have the opportunity to take their lessons out of the classroom. The parks and nature reserves offer an unparalleled experience for investigating scientific concepts, laying the foundation for the fundamentals of mathematics and even for building the social framework that is so important in child development.

“These field trips are very special for classes in a Waldorf school, as (the students) have an opportunity to bond and create memories in an environment outside of school. Depending on what we are studying, the children might bring the curriculum right along with them… This is the way our curriculum lives in our students,” stated Mrs. Manzke. Regular hikes begin with the Kindergarten class and continue through the grades, with many classes enjoying the outdoor experience monthly.
