2011 Altadena Crime Stats: Drops in Most Crime Categories

The Sheriff's Department has released a full set of 2011 crime statistics and the numbers show Altadena dropping in every category except one.

Crime statistics recently released by the show Altadena has seen a significant decrease in both property and violent crimes, part of a trend the town has seen all year.

In total, violent crime dropped by 17.4 percent compared with 2010, and property crime dropped by 25.3 percent.

In total, compared to the entire county, only one station saw a bigger one-year drop in crime, as pointed out by Sheriff's volunteer Carolyn Seitz, who sent out an email on the subject.

That does not mean Altadena is the second-safest station area in the county, but it did have the sixth lowest crime-rate of the 23 stations. Malibu/Lost Hills, Walnut, San Dimas, Crescenta Valley and Santa Clarita Valley are the five with lower crime rates in 2010.

As we've discussed on the site before, the drops in property crime are not surprising, considering that in the first six months of 2010 Altadena saw a tremendous increase in burglaries and other property crimes.  At the same time, the five-year-trend is encouraging, showing a 10.7 percent drop in property crime compared to 2006.
