Altadena Captain Joins Officers, Dodger in MLK Parade

Captain John Benedict joined Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp and many of Sheriff Lee Baca's command staff for the event Saturday.

In honor of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., thousands attended the 28th annual Kingdom Day Parade in the Crenshaw District Saturday, including Altadena Captain John Benedict, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Benedict was one of Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca’s command staff on hand and got to meet parade grand marshal and Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp (seen in photo attached).

The parade was themed “His Dream Will Never Die” and featured an effort by Donate Life California to promote organ and tissue donation in L.A.’s black and multi-cultural communities. Transplant recipients, donor family members and living donors road a decorated double-decker bus themed “Get Onboard Donate Life.”

Usually held on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the parade was held two days earlier this year so it did not conflict with Monday’s inauguration of President Barack Obama.
