Altadena Shooter Appeared to Have Extensive Criminal Record

Records show an extensive criminal record for a man with the same name and birth date as the man who shot his mother and then himself on Sunday in Altadena.

A man who appeared to have had an extensive criminal record, including a conviction for assault with a deadly weapon in 1999.

Shaun Rangel, 40, was found with a self-inflicted gun wound in the 3200 block of Lincoln Avenue Sunday night, after a five-hour police standoff following his mother's shooting.  Rangel's mother had been asking him to move out of her home shortly before the violence took place, according to Lt. Duane Allen of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

According to a records search, a man with the same middle name and birth date as Rangel has a conviction for assault with deadly weapon filed at the Pasadena Courthouse, as well as convictions for drug possession, petty theft, and several misdemeanor charges.

Shiara Davila-Morales, a spokeswoman for the County District Attorney's Office, said the 1999 assault case resulted in a three-year prison sentence. She was unable to confirm whether Rangel served the term or not, but unless he filed and won an appeal, the sentence indicates he would have been incarcerated, Davila-Morales said.

Sheriff's Department records also indicate that a man with the same middle name and birth date as Rangel was arrested on January 31 for a misdemeanor charge and was released the same day on bail.  The record does not indicate what the misdemeanor was.

Altadena Patch left messages for this story with representatives of the Sheriff's Department, but has not yet heard back.

Police said Rangel shot his mother in the leg, and then she fled with two family members in their car.  Rangel put several more bullets into the side of the car, according to police accounts.

On Sunday, much of the area around Rangel's home was barricaded off as SWAT team members prepared to enter the home.  The SWAT team members were never able to establish communications with Rangel, and eventually used gas to attempt to render him unconscious. They entered shortly after and found his body inside, with the gunshot wound.
