CHP Reports One Fatality in LA County During Holiday

CHP officers arrested 258 motorists on suspicion of drunken driving countywide.

The California Highway Patrol Monday reported one traffic-related death on Los Angeles County highways during the first 60 hours of this year's three-day Memorial Day weekend.

The lone fatality was a woman killed when she was thrown from a car during a wreck on the Harbor (110) Freeway,  just south of downtown at 3:50 a.m. Monday morning.

The reporting period began at 6:01 p.m. Friday and concluded Monday at 6 a.m. During that same reporting period last year, there were three traffic-related fatalities in Los Angeles County, according to a department statement.

Statewide, this year, there were 11 fatalities, compared with 13 during the same time period last year.

In Los Angeles County, CHP officers arrested 258 motorists on suspicion of drunken driving, down from last year's total of 298.

CHP officers in Orange County made more suspected drunken driving arrests this year than last, officials said. Officers arrested 60 drivers who were allegedly under the influence this year compared with 50 during the same
time period in 2011.

Statewide, the CHP reported 1,161 DUI arrests, in comparison to last year's total of 1,223.
