Sheriff's Dept Acquires Three Super Pumas
The Super Puma Air Rescue 5 helicopters will provide greater safety, faster response time in high-altitude mountain rescues.
The LA County Sheriff’s Department is replacing its aging Sikorsky Sea King helicopters with three used Super Puma Air Rescue 5’s. The Super Pumas’ smaller size and additional speed and power will be particularly valuable in mountain rescues around Los Angeles County, according to a release from the LA County Sheriff’s Department.
Once delivered, the Super Pumas will be upgraded with external hoists, infrared cameras, night-vision compatible cockpits, and multi-patient medical interiors.
“The Super Pumas are equipped with advanced technological enhancements that will enable the Air Rescue 5 personnel to maintain the highest operational capability and the ability to fly in nearly all weather conditions,” said Sheriff Baca.
Although they will be used primarily as rescue aircraft, the Super Pumas will also provide SWAT and homeland security support, as well as transportation in the wake of natural disasters.
