Updated: Hiker Evacuated by Helicopter at Eaton Canyon

A helicopter and several ground units reported to Eaton Canyon on Wednesday afternoon to assist a hiker stuck on a cliff.

A hiker who was stuck on the side of a cliff was airlifted to safety Wednesday afternoon, according to Deputy Charles Youngstrom of the Altadena Sheriff's Station.

The hiker was uninjured, but called for help after climbing in the area above the first waterfall, he said.

Ground units and a helicopter reported to the scene around receiving the call ay 1:42 p.m, according to Inspector Quovondo Johnson of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

According to police scanner traffic, the helicopter rescued the hiker shortly after 2:20 p.m.  He was dropped at the Aveson Charter School campus, according to Youngstrom.

What is going on ? It seems that every couple of days a hicker is rescued . Folks should take precations and not go where they put themselves in danger. I am starting to think that before using the trails a bacic course in safety would have to be passed, also the hicker or his family should be charged for the services involved in the rescue.

Better yet, issue fines for going out of bounds. This is beyond ridiculous, every other week we have some folks going out there and getting injured or stuck. The county resources could be spent in much better ways.

The Search and Rescue operation is funded in large part through donations. Also, consider that Eaton Canyon is a real life training ground for SAR volunteers. The whole front range is filled with places for people to get hurt or killed. It's extremely steep. I would rather have the majority of the idiots coming the Eaton Canyon to get rescued, than go to my favorite trails. In addition to rescues, they bring graffiti, trash, and noise to these beautiful places. I say let them keep doing their stunts in Eaton Canyon...At least everyone else can hike in peace!
