Hiking Group Found, Returned to Chantry Flat

The group was headed for Mount Wilson when they got stranded, authorities said.

A hiking club dueled with the elements Saturday morning when they left the Chantry Flat area for Mount Wilson and were stranded and had to be rescued, authorities said.

Sheriff's deputies from the Crescenta Valley Station received a call about 11:05 a.m. and a rescue unit was flagged down by one of the club's members, who told the officer of the group's plight, said Sgt. Debra Herman.

"He said they got separated because of the rain and snow," she said.

Rescue team members then mobilized and rounded up the 12-member group and driving them back to their cars in Chantry Flat.

No injuries were reported.

I agree! I went on a hike today on the Upper Winter Creek trail and it was absolutely beautiful. I actually wait for weather like this all year round! I was comfortably bundled up with layers and two extras pairs of dry socks. If you're a seasoned hiker and you're prepared then the weather really isn't that much of an issue at least in the San Gabriels.

I get repulsive when I read comments about how "stupid" the rescued hikers are. No one goes out in the forest knowing they will need to be rescued. It is always wiser to to ask for help when you feel like you're in a dangerous situation. If you're hiking and you feel like your life is in danger call for the rescue team. They exist to help you when you're life is in danger in the mountains.
